BF deal on GOOD waterproof camera?

All point and shoots have limitations. Certainly there are fewer with higher end models where the larger lenses can extend and, more importantly, the flashes are better. Those features aren't available on waterproof models for obvious reasons. I use the waterproof cameras for those activities and situations where it would be unwise to use a D-SLR.

Nope, not all point and shoots will perform this way. If you've ever used any of the higher end Canon point and shoots, they are very good in low light situations, even when a good distance away. My Canon G10 rarely, if ever, produces grainy photos. It actually produces better photos than my Panasonic bridge camera, that was twice the price ($500 vs. $1000.00).

Yes, that is true for waterproof, which is why I only use my waterproof in limited situations. I use it sparingly at waterpark, a few times in the rain and at beach. Disposables have gone up in price, so I figure that even if it lasts a few years, it might have been around the same price as buying disposables.

Most of my shots are with my other digitals, especially my Canon G10, due to the limitations you mentioned. I did see a few test shots from the Panasonic and Sony waterproof models, and they looked pretty good considering the conditions, but again, here in Canada, those two models are over $400.00 with tax.

Great thread for those interested in waterproof cameras! Tiger :)

I have to disagree with this one. I've had nothing but trouble with 3 olympus waterproof cameras... aside from underwater and skiing pictures; the photos were fairly bad. The battery life is poor. And the thing shorted out twice in the first year.

Olympus was great in replacing it, but a rep told me that those are consistant problems.

If you want a waterproof camera- I would go for the cheapest one you can find -even disposable- and then use a different camera for the shots that matter.

We had the first version of it DH took it everywhere for over 4 years including jumping of planes to water and eventually it lost the seal but DH took it places the camera shouldn't have been. Battery life in ours was great. Not sure which one you had because olympus has many waterproof cameras.

I have a Canon D10, and I use it now as our all around camera instead of my bigger, more expensive camera. It takes great underwater and above the water pictures and video. :)

The only issues I have are that it fogs up easy, but anti-fog wipes cured that

I can also recommend the Canon D10. It's also "shockproof". DH and DS bring it camping, hiking, kayaking. Works great.
