Beware of Crocs in the Rain

I love my crocs and wear them often. I wore them on one of our parks days with Tropical Storm Fay. I slipped 3 times. One time I actually hurt myself. They are great in light rain, but if there is any layer of water on the ground, they get very slippery, especially on tile. By the end of the day, I ended up going barefoot because I was so afraid of slipping again. (it was raining so hard, and everyone was just concentrating on getting where they were going, no one noticed my bare feet). We saw numerous small children in Crocs falling.

I wore my teva flip flops from there on out, they were not nearly as slippery.

I guess if you are going to be there during some severe rain, find some shoes with great soles. Those Keens that someone else linked to look great. Or the older sandal-style tevas. (I wish I had brought mine).

Crocs originated as boat shoes and if they are new or lightly used with lots of tread, are pretty good when the ground is wet. If the tread is wrong, you can definitely hurt yourself. I busted my knee on wet ground with worn crocs and my friend did so in MK. OUCH!

They aren't kidding on their website when they say that if the tread is worn...time for a new pair.

Really have to disagree with your assesment Sunshine, the OP is right. I have crocs, and at no time in their life, brand new, slightly worn or whatever, have they been anything but awful in the rain. They are literally like standing on ice in running shoes if you wear them on cement that is wet, the smooth kind, like that is all over disney. 5 dollar flip flops are better. Its not difficult to see why, get that croc material wet, push hard against it and run your finger along it, there is so little friction. Try it with a running shoe, a lot more resistance, thats all there is to it. I know they say its slip resistant, compared to what? They are really bad in the rain, so its no wonder they didnt catch on as boat shoes. I know no one who sails that uses them for instance, and know quite a few who do sail. They caught on as casul footwear.

Good call OP, they arent good for the rain.

I was wondering why my 8 year old was walking so gingerly in the 3 inch backlogged water in Epcot last week. Never occured to me that it was his shoes... (I was wearing flipflops) I was thinking he was trying not to get wet. Kind of late for that! Yeah, and don't forget, when the rain is coming down in buckets the sewers backup and it's up past your ankles...we aren't talking about a little puddle here!

Oh No! I just got a pair for my toddler to use when playing in the water areas! Is this a bad idea? Was about to go and get my almost 4 year old a pair for the same thing. (I don't like sandles for kids, so they don't have anything else - just gym shoes with socks!) Any ideas?

I couldn't concur more! Crocs are terrible in the rain, which is really ironic, seeing as they are toutes as shoes for the rain.

Slipperiest place on WDW property with 'em - the queue at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. If it's raining, take them off to walk through there!

I guess they're a little young for flip flops. You could get the sandals that are like flip flops with more straps? Im not sure why the aversoin to sandals and not crocs, but thats your choice. Only thing I can think of if you dont like those is water shoes.

Crocs are good for water for one reason only, you dont wear socks with them, and they're open so they dry. But, thats like any flip flop out there, and despite what people think you can spend 30 or so bucks on sandals or flip flops, and get pretty much what you get with a croc. I find my adidas flip flops to be more comfortable by a lot.

Been wearing Crocs for a few years, in fact, all of us have. When they are worn they do get slippery from the bottom of the soles. When they get wet, they get slippery on the inside portion of the shoe; not so much with the Cayman, but the Beach are oversized and tend to shift alot more.

While I don't like the way they feel on my bare feet when they are wet, I don't have a problem with them walking in the rain as long as I don't run. If the bottom of the shoes are worn, lets say, 60% or more, be careful. I've always replaced my Crocs when they were almost smooth at the bottom. At that stage, it was a little scary walking with them in the rain as they do slip & slide around a bit. With brand new Crocs, I've never slipped or had a mishap in wet weather.

Agreed Raven. I"ve never had slipping problems with a good pair of Crocs with most of their tread. I busted my knee open in a pair of warn Mary Janes Crocs though

The ones I was wearing were about 3 weeks old - still pretty new. I am not kidding - I had a REALLY HARD TIME in them.

I have 3 pairs, and I love them. I really do. In light rain they are fine. Its the downpours that left the ground with a 'layer of water' that seems to be the problem or anywhere slick to begin with. Tile was horrible.

I just wanted people to be aware. I am in no way bashing crocs because I love them.

Heres a good trial. Im not saying you have had problems, but crocs, brand new or whatever, slip really badly when wet. Get a pair, spray water on a lino or tile floor, walk across it, suddenly stop midstep. They will try shoot out from you a lot more than a regular shoe. Its not really even debatable, you can say I dont have a problem, but the simple fact is they are slippery in water, a lot more so than other shoes.

You said yourself, as long as you dont run. Well, stopping suddenly or turning suddenly puts identical stress and forces on a shoe sole as running in a straight line, probably more, turning creates a lot more force. I can run in my flip flops, my runners, my casual walkers and have a lot more grip than my crocs, which I love for dry days. I dont think everyone that posted on here was simply lieing, so its safe to say a warning is well done. Its not really a personal opinion thing, even if your experience differed, the fact that they are dangerous because they slip shoud be heeded and not railed against.

Great to know, I was planning on purchasing crocs for my 4 years old and 2 years old for our next trip. I will make sure to pack backups.

Last Sept I was skating in Epcot. Thank goodness I had the stroller to push so I looked graceful . They are very slippery as soon as the tread starts to go just a little.

I think that's why I'm a big fan of flipflops, yes my butt gets sandy when I wear them on the beach (from the sand flying up) and my legs get wet when there is water on the ground, but every time I have tried on a pair in the store the just feel weird to me. I hope that everyone is ok, not saying that I can't fall in flip flops either.

Oh I meant - all my kids wear are gym shoes and socks - sandals make me nervous with open toes and them slipping off. I only got my toddler a pair of Crocs 'cuz they were on clearance and they looked like they'd be perfect to wear in the mornings when I plan on letting the kids get soaked (if they want) in the play areas. For my older son I was planning on having him wear his usual gym shoes/socks and just sticking some other shoes in the bottom of the stroller for him to put on to play for a bit in the water, but then I thought maybe he could walk around in crocs and we wouldn't have to waste time taking shoes off.

Looks like I'm going to leave the super cute Sponge Bob Crocs (can't believe I just called Crocs cute) at home and just bring along the water shoes the boys already have for our sprinkler park here. Those do not get slippery at all! And just have the boys change if/when they want to get soaked? It's just that usually, I'm the last to realize that they plan on getting wet and by then - it's too late.

O.K. I hear your warning, and now have to ask-what on earth should we wear next week? I was planning on crocs for everybody b/c they dry in the rain, but now... What is everybody else wearing instead?

Just bought my DD some of the 'cooks' crocks. Like what Mario Batali wears they have a different sole and is non slip for working in a kitchen. Don't remember the specific name of them but if slipping is a worry then check them out on the crocs website. DD called me and said they are working great for her and her feet and back don't hurt at the end of the day now. She is a baker/cake decorator.

I wear the Croc Capri Flip Flops at WDW & so far have had absolutely no slipping issues whatsoever. Wore them for 15 hours straight the first part of August at MK during some torrential downpours and lots of puddles & had absolutely no issues. I can't wear the regular Crocs. The only other pair I own (besides 3 prs of flips) are the wooly Mammoth ones which I wear in cold weather here in Florida. It could also be that I'm used to wearing the Croc flip flops in all types of weather here in Florida so I don't have the slipping issue even if I'm not at WDW.
