Beware handicapped rooms if you're not handicapped!!!

That is why, Sharon, you are going to heaven and the rest of us...well...not so much! ;)
Thanks.. I have gotten mellower as my old age sets in... :rotfl: I have stayed in a handicapped room at the Comfort Inn on Palm Parkway one time... it wasn't too bad. I didn't like the room because it was dirty..but I lived with the shower. I actually liked the big shower since that is what I am use to. What I didn't like was that there was no table & chairs in the room...guess they needed it for more wheelchair access?? Don't know if it was my imagination or not, but the room "seemed" bigger than a standard...maybe because of less furniture??? Oh well.

We stayed in a HC room in CSR, about 10 years ago, when my wife and I were still in college and at the time, I did not realize that it was a HC room. I had never seen one before, and I had always stayed in Deluxe Resorts. I remember thinking "Whoa...the CSR is really cheap, I mean, no bathtubs! These Moderates have really cut back on luxuries!" A couple days into our trip, I just happened to ask a CM why they decided to make a resort with no tubs and she said "Um...all of our rooms have tubs (and gave me the old  )" When I told her that ours didn't, she explained to me the wonderful world of HC guest rooms. I could not believe that I didn't figure it out myself. Anyway, we stayed in it because we were 2 adults and the "shower only" bathroom was no big deal, although I can understand the frustration of having a baby and no bathtub.

I think with that amount of luggage & the time you were going to be staying in that room, I would have just stuck it out for the night. I can understand what you are saying, but to me, having children & all that luggage, staying put would have been easier for me. Skip the bath one night for the kids & stick them in the shower...they would have had a blast.. I use to do that at home with my kids, let them sit in my shower... their bath has a tub/shower deal & mine is only a shower ...very large at that, which I would think the handicaped shower would have been. .... place a towel on the shower floor, let them sit & have the water hit them...

Looking back you are probably right.
It might have been easier and *cheaper tip wise* just to suffer that one night.
I think it was more anger and frustration that snowballed at every turn.
We had just arrived from and exhastive plane ride. DS2 was a squirming mess the whole way. Both kids were literally, and I mean literally!, running and chasing each other around the room like crazy (and I wasn't going to yell at them, they had been cooped up and well behaved all day from 8AM to 6PM).
Plus I didn't want them messing up the room if we weren't staying either so that added to our stress.

If we just had a room that we were going to stay in I would have unpacked and given tham a long hot bath to "knock them out".
You shower idea doesn't work for us.
Tried something similar when we use the family's cabin in Maine.
Lots of work!
And the main point is [and the CAPS are not diected at you]........WE PAID WAY TO MUCH TO MESS AROUND LIKE WE DID!

This has been an interesting thread.

Speaking as someone who adores the rooms w/ no bathtubs it's really interesting to read about what is awesome and the most convenient for once person is a hassle and annoyance to another.

I guess the handicapped rooms vary from resort to resort. We once had a king room for the handicapped at BWI. It had an absolutely huge bathroom with tub/shower combo, as well as a Boardwalk view and the biggest balcony (really a terrace) we've ever had at any Disney resort. We only stayed one night before moving to BWV, but I'd have been thrilled to have it for an entire stay. I always assumed we got it because we were only staying one night and they didn't need it for a handicapped person for that one night.

A shower-only room would definitely be a problem with children, however, so my sympathies to the OP.

We booked a handicapped or 1st floor room 8 months in advance at the POP for our 4 yr old son that has cerebral pasly. i called the week before and everything was all set. When we got down there 1. they lost our reservation so the request was dismissed. we ended up on the 2nd floor b/c no HANDICAPPED or 1st floor rooms were available. they need to monitor this much better.

In my experience, all special needs booked rooms were always flagged and pre-blocked in such a way so that they could not be tampered with without supervision approval.

Unfortunetly, anytime there are computers, there's bound to be a glitch every now and then. Just like everyone else, Murphy likes to vacation at Disney, and he brings his Law with him. It's very rare that a glitch like that happens, and a reservation gets lost. Usually things can be fixed. However, in your case, requests were neccessities, so it's unfortunate that it wasn't able to be resolved. :(
