I have two beautiful male bettas that live in a dual tank (with a divider) on my desk at work. So they share water. Ive had them for about 3 months.
I keep the tank very clean. I replenish 50% of the water weekly and do a complete water change monthly. I also put in new ammonia-absorbing pebbles with each complete water change.
One of them (Jaws) seems to be losing part of his tail. I have done extensive research on the internet on tail rot but Im not sure that is what this is. The edges of his tail are white which indicates new growth, doesnt it? My understanding is that tail rot leaves black edges.
He is still very active, his color is vibrant and he is still a pig at meal time. The other betta (Moby) is fine with no disappearing fins or tail. I feed them Hikari Betta Bio-Gold with an occasional treat of freeze-dried bloodworms. (Yum!)
I bought some Melafix yesterday but the more research I do the more afraid I am to use it and Im not sure I need to.
For any fish experts out there, should I just try a complete water change and maybe start adding aquarium salt? I really dont want to medicate if I dont have to. Should I keep them in separate tanks for awhile? They seem to enjoy sharing a tank. They cant see each other but I think they sense each other by water movement because they spar at the divider sometimes.
Also, while Im asking, is it okay to use bottled water? If so, is Wal-Mart brand drinking water okay? Ive been using tap water and letting it sit out for at least 24 hours or in a pinch using chlorine neutralizing drops.
Okay, sorry so long! I cant believe how attached I have gotten to these fish! Any suggestions appreciated.
