Best way to transfer credit card held reservation?

I searched around in the ADR cancellation threads but couldn't find this.

What's the best way to transfer a reservation for a cruise -- or any credit card reserved thing, I guess.

Do you think having the first guest call and cancel and then quickly PMing or phoning the 2nd and then they call, would work? Once a reservation is cancelled, does anyone know how long it takes to show up as available? Minutes? The next morning?

What's the best way to go about doing this? Thanks -- I really want the cruise someone has offered me, but I just don't want to mess it up!
