Best way to shine pennies?

This is not true. You do get the very penny you supply.

Actually, in Canada, they do use copper slugs, not the Canadian penny you put in. In the US, 99.9 times out of 100, you will actually be smashing your coin. It's a difference in laws between the two countries - US law allows smashing the penny since it isn't for any deceptive use, Canada does not allow their coins to be smashed. (I've been told that this is because of laws against defacing the image of the Queen, but I'm not sure of that.....)

Of course, using a copper slug means you avoid any chance of zinc streaks, so it's not an entirely bad thing. All depends how you look at your collection - does it NEED to be real coins that were smashed, or do you just like the souvenir you get? I have some Canadian versions and they're really nice. :)

Do you have to use US pennies in the machines, or can u use canadian ones??

I use Bar Keepers friend on my copper pots, I imagine it would work on pennies -- but you have so many ideas to try now. :thumbsup2

I just tried the Bar Keepers Friend tip! It works great!! :goodvibes The pennies look brand new and only took a few seconds to work.

DH caught me shining them and thinks I'm nuts. :teeth:

ok so now I've shined a whole M&M mini tube full of pre 1982 pennies so can I put these in my carry on with out it causing a problem. silly ?? but after all the sorting and cleaning I really would hate to get to WDW to find them gone. I first tried vinegar and salt it didn't work too well. Then I'd seen a commercial for EasyOff Bam where the guy puts a dirty coin into the stuff and it workked pretty well got alot of the gunk off. Today I happened to be walking down that aisle at the grocery(and thinking about the pennies which is a miracle that it all came together at the same time) and bought the copper cleaner and the pennies I thought were good enough REALLY shined up with this stuff. These pennies look hot off the press and they are all at least 25 yrs old!!! Can't wait to see them all smashed in dds book.

The pennies normally won't cause a problem, but they will often get you a short wait while the TSA screener asks you to open the bag so they can check it out. The scanner can't see through the coins, so they just need to verify there isn't anything hiding under there. It takes us about 1 minute to get through that and has never set us up for additional screening. The same thing happens when we buy too many pins and I put those in the bag. :)

Wow - great thread. I have to check out where all these machines are. I do like pressed pennies and got about 6 of them while at WDW (and one 50th anniversary quarter at the Poly).

Anyway, where did you all get the Mickey Mouse books to hold them? At Disney ... (even though I know they are not as good to hold the pennies per the mikey13v the obsessive collecter :teeth: ).

PS - can't wait to see if Barkeeper's Friend will shine mine up -- may even try Magic Eraser, my newest fav cleaning product -- it took a splotch of 10 year old paint off my china cabinet --- whoo hoo!

Taco Bell hot sauce (not the mild or the fire, the hot).
Squirt some on each side of the penny (or drop some pennies in a cup with the stuff in it) and wait a few minutes (about the time it takes to eat a taco) then rinse.
Works great.

One of the many lessons I learned from my high school youth leaders at church and have since passed on to my youth group kids. :)

I also use Toca Bell Hot sauce but what I do is open the package, empty half of the sauce out, drop the penny in in, hold in closed with one hand and use the other hand to rub the penny throu the package.......it gets the penny cleaner then anythign else I've tried. :sunny:

I've used just about everything out there (lemon juice & salt, vinegar, coke, baking soda, tace sauce, brasso, bar keepers friend, etc...), but the best one was toothpaste (I use Crest whitening gel) and it was fantastic. I noticed that the others get them shiny (with a lot of work), but they start darkening the day after for whatever reason.

Toothpaste is my best friend!!

I thought all of you pressed penny collectors would find this interesting. (my DH is a collect, however he just started)

The other day I was going through a group of coins my grandfather had in an old case. I had never been through the case. Inside was a pressed penny from The 1904 Worlds Fair, which was in St. Louis. I was surprised to find they did pressed pennies back then.

Quite a nice addition for my DH's collection. :)

When I'm looking at the pressed penny list I received from the website www.pressedcoins.com and it has the location and then when it lists the discription is has a (V) or a (H) in front of the discription. What does that stand for?

V = vertical

H = horizontal

Most of the penny designs are vertical.
