Best way to potty in WDW?

I'm potty training my 2 year old DD and am wondering what I should prepare her for in WDW. I understand about the automatic toliets and plan on bringing post-it notes or stickers to cover that up. What about foldable potty seats? I've read that they can pinch, but those posts are almost a year old. Any improvements on those? I would like to get her used to whatever I expect her to do in WDW before we go. We are only on day 4 of training, but it is going well. I have 5 weeks before we go on our trip.

What about pull-ups? Put them on her while on our trip or not? I hadn't planned to, but after doing a search on potty training I see a lot of folks do for their little ones (one did for her 9 year old!) I don't want her to get confused, but I'm not sure that she would. Maybe I'll try those knew "Feel and Learn" training pants rather than pull-ups. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks.

I would do whatever it is that you do when you take her out in public on a regular basis and bring extra clothes to the parks just in case. Just remember that the flush at WDW scares a lot of kids and sometimes covering the sensors doesn't work becuase there is a button to push and kids love to push buttons (my sure did and scared the wits out of himself).

We put our DD 2 1/2 at the time (April) in pull ups for the trip during the day.... She had 1 accident in her pull up while she was with Daddy when I was riding TOT... The rest of the trip she stayed dry as a bone... I was really worried she would take a step backward as she has been wearing big girl pants for months... She didn't!!! In fact she became totally pull up free even at night in July!

It was just nice knowing that I didn't have to carry 9000 pairs of undies!!!

I hate to be negative, but I think that it's very possible that your little one will not be really well trained in a month. Yes, some are and I had one of them, but for many children, even those who start out doing very well, it takes months of pratice to be totaly independent in this really tough new skill. I think it's going to be really hard not to presure her to "hurry up" with the trip around the cornner. I would just be prepared for where ever she is at the point of the trip, including pretty much still in diapers if that might be the case. Newly trained at WDW is very hard as lines, and "holding" it can be trying. I think I would pretty much stick to pull-ups if your are using these, anytime you go out at home until after the trip. That way your can say that big girl panties are for after WDW, and it won't seem as much like regression. SOme cool big girl panties from WDW could not hurt either. Just go with the flow and don't let it stress you out on this trip.

Hee hee...this is just the problem! I don't KNOW what I do when I take her out because I haven't taken her out yet! lol. I can't decide if I should do pull-ups when we go out or not. Guess I'll have to figure it out by tomorrow as I have some errands to run.

I would do the pull-ups and as Jordan's Mom said, perhaps get some disney big girl panties as a souvenier for when you return home...incentive, if necessary, and if she's ready, to return to underwear after your trip.

Oh, I don't think you are being negative. I think you are being realistic. I really don't know what to expect from her. This is my first time potty training. I debated waiting till after our trip, but that would be two more months and she was really showing the signs of being ready. So I decided to go for it. I'm HOPING she will be well trained by then, but who knows. It may just become apparent that pull-ups are going to be a neccessity as the trip draws closer, or it may go the other way.

We are on day 4 and so far no accidents...but no pee yet either...it's still early. She's said she needs to go about 3 times so far and has sat down on the potty, so I'm encouraged that she is taking the initiative. I do put her in pull-ups at night and they are soaked in the morning.

I won't be pressuring her to hurry-up however. I'm fairly laid back in general and understand that she will go at her own pace regardless of what I want her to do!

Thanks for your input!

Roserae...just the attitude every parent should have about potty training. I'll never forget my MIL giving me some old-fashioned book about how to potty train your child in a day....it involved forcing them to drink lots, keeping them in one room all day, and rewarding them with treats you keep in your apron pocket! As my own mom said to me, "Darling, you know she won't go to Kindergarten in diapers...when she's ready, she's ready!"
And while diapers are expensive and time-consuming...the neverending visits to public restrooms when they are training is exhausting...not knowing if she truly has to go or is just wanting to take a look around...lol. Have fun and enjoy every moment! Children grow up so fast as it is!

Thanks, I am giving her more fluids than usual...Sprite and diet A&W rootbeer. This is a treat for her and she is drinking more, but I figure the more she pees, the more opportunity to learn, but this is the last day for that! I also have M&M's and princess stickers for her as rewards for her success or for just trying (sitting on the potty for more than 2 seconds!). But fortunately, she doesn't seemed to focused on these rewards, but on her successes in the chair. So, I'm happy of that. And yes, I keep reminding myself as your mom did...she won't be going to kindergarten in diapers!

Frankly, I love diapers! They are so much easier than worrying about accidents and bathroom locations, but that is just laziness on my part! We are bringing my friend and her 7 year old who has Down Syndrome on this trip and he is just finishing potty training himself, so we will have to be taking many potty breaks with him anyway. This is one of the reasons I decided to go ahead and start training her now.

Anyway...thanks for all the input.

If you are flying, I would definitely recommend a pull-up. It's so hard to get to the potty on an airplane.

During the parks, I would try both options. Maybe start out with the pull-ups & if she goes to the potty well & keeps the pull-up dry, reward her with trying the panties for a day. See how it goes.

Congrats on potty training a 2 year old. DS will be 3 end of Sept & has NO interest what-so-ever!

My ds just started using the potty a few weeks ago. He started on a Tues. and Thurs. was telling me he had to go on his own. He has had a few accidents since, but they were while he was running to the potty.

We leave for Disney next week and I am having the same problems as you trying to decide what to do. He has been dry at nap time and the last few nights he has been dry, but I'm bringing diapers for those times, just in case.

I'm bringing pull-ups too and will play those by ear. What I wanted to let you know was that I bought a fold-up travel potty seat (Graco has one, as well as others) and he uses that when we are out running errands. It folds up small and this way he isn't using the big seat and feels more secure.

The other thing I bought was an "On The Go Potty". It is a portable potty chair. It has a seat and legs that fold up into itself. There are liners that you use that look like plastic bags with a pad in them that absorbs the liquids and you just take it off, tie it up and throw it away like you would a diaper. It was really cheap ($10 for the seat and $5 for a pack of ten liners). If you want more info, PM me and I can give you that website I bought it from.

I'm planning on having that with us so if we're somewhere that no bathrooms are around (i.e. parking lot of a park) or if we get to the bathroom and huge line, I can bring him inside and have him sit on it on the floor.

You have more time so maybe things will work out and you/she will be more comfortable with things. I know for the flight, I am planning on putting him in a pull-up and will have all of my "accessories" to use if need be.

Have a great trip!

Nancy

Thanks for all the suggestions! Today has gone REALLY well with the potty training. She even pooped in the potty without ANY prompting. I didn't even know that was what she was doing until I went in there and she said, "Go away!" I knew then, because that is what she would say when she stood in a corner doing her business in her diaper. No accidents at all. Went to the park down the street for an hour. I'm very encouraged!

Oh, and to the poster who said congrats on potty training a 2 y.o. Well, she'll be three at the end of October....so she's just barely a 2 year old! She wasn't showing any interest either. But I could tell that she knew when she was pooping, because as I said she would tell me to go away. So, I figured if she knew that, plus her age, she should be ready. Good luck with your little guy.

I am in the same boat.... we leave for WDW in September and my DS (who will be 3 in October) has just started using the potty!! I started using those "feel and learn" pampers. I like them because they seem softer than the pull ups and feel less like a diaper and more like real underware. While I cannot attribute those diapers to DS's desire to use the potty, I do like the fact that he seems uncomfortable in them once they are wet (like regular underware). I think I am going to go with the "feel and learn" diapers while at WDW and I will just try to get him to the potty as much as possible and hope for the best.
Good luck!!

As someone who just finished potty-training her second child, I suggest buying the pull-ups. What we would do with my DS was have him go before we went somewhere then put the pull-up on him. Less chance of becoming discouraged that way. He understood that when we got home he could put his "big boy pants" back on. Plus there are pull-ups with the princesses on them now. My DS wanted those -- he is a big Snow White fan! (We finally convinced him that Buzz was cool, too.) If your DD isn't showing much interest, you might want to try having a treasure box or some other incentive. With both of my kids, the big incentive was that they wanted to go to school. We explained to them that they couldn't go to school unless they were potty-trained. This seemed to be the thing that worked like magic for them.

Boy, you ARE in the same boat! We are even going to be at WDW at the same time. I'm going to get those feel and learn pampers today I think. Today will be the first time out of the house since potty training, so we'll see how she does.

I just got back from Orlando and my DD was potty training while we were there. I decided to put her in pull-ups for the trip. I just made lots of pit stops for her to potty and she did great! No accidents, dry pull-up the whole trip (even at night).

My dd was 18mths and we travelled with the on-the go potty
http://www.kidsurplus.com/potette.html
It works great and the bags are easy to take care of. I have one in the car and one always with me in my diaper bag (I have a 9mth old dd too). The refills are expensive so I just use a little plastic bag. It has been a lifesaver. I wouldn't put your child in pull-ups if you are in the middle of training because sometimes you might have to start all over (just my opinion) DD finally learned because I used the training underwear ( by gerber - extra thick) it absorbed more but it was definitely more laundry! They even have ones that are plastic lined so it doesn't leak as much.
The foldable seat that you put directly on the toilet is not safe, we have one that we got at bed-bath& beyond - it slips and sometimes would fall in (YUCK!!)
Hope this helps a bit--- by the way, we used bribery with our dd. We got some toys for her (barbie, pretend make up, pooh panties, etc) and told her that if she went on the potty all day and didn't have an accident she gets one prize. Then we upped it to 3 days and the big one was for going poopie and pee-pee in the potty for a week with no accident. It WORKED!!!! Who would thought!
Good luck on the training, just remember- be patient and it will happen.

This is basically what we did. I did use pull-ups because my DS's would both give you about 1 minute's notice when they needed to go while beginning potty training.

You can't always get to a bathroom quickly in WDW--30 minute bus trips come to mind

I haven't read through all but I know one step ahead website sells portable pottys that I believe are soft and they pee/poo into bags that you take off and toss or dump.

Sorry if its been posted a bunch of times about this but I don't have time to read through all now.

Thanks everyone! Potty training couldn't be going better. No accidents for two days now at least! Even woke up dry this morning and again after her nap today. Went to Walmart and she peed on the big potty without any problem. No foldable seat or anything, just sat on it (with my help). Serious handwashing afterwards! And they have automatic flushers there, which I didn't notice until it flushed while she was on it and she handled that great too. Just turned around to see what was happening, but didn't scare her. I will still cover them with a post-it though, because with all the noise and water running, I couldn't tell if she was peeing or not...and who wants to be sitting on the toliet while it's flushing?....yuck.

Another big test tomorrow...church in panties! I'll be bringing some pull-ups just in case, because I don't think it's fair to expect the Sunday school teacher to be dealing with more than one accident. But I truly don't think she will have one.

May not be an issue at all in WDW since that is still 5 weeks away. I will definitely be bringing pull-ups, but maybe I won't need them!

Thanks again!
