Best Way to Handle a Problem?

I disagree that they couldn't find out who the guiity party is if they chose to do so. Don't the rooms have smoke/fire alarms? (I'm sure code requires them). Why aren't they set to go off if someone is smoking?

Seems like the alarms could / should be configured so that the the monitoring center knows which room is "on fire" or has the faulty detector.

Too bad Disney won't enforce the rule. It would only take a few fines before the scolaws would figure out they really meant it.

Most smoke detectors are not that sensitive and you really don't want them to be, that could mean the smoke from a hot shower could set them off, do you really want 1,000s of guest emptying a building because some one took a nice long shower (think how pissed people get when your smoke alarm goes off in the kitchen from cooking) and some may also be configured to sense smoke and heat or could be tied to the sprinkler system. Now do you want every thing soaking wet because some jerk is smoking and the sprinkler system is tripped? Does disney have a monitoring center in the hotel or is it tied into the city's fire station? Think how happy firemen are going to be after getting a few false alarms.

I agree 100% that we need some thing to stop self centered folks from breaking the rules but I don't think tampering with fire alarms is the way to go.

Disney use to have smoking buildings and nonsmoking buildings. Now there is just nonosmoking. Geez, Disney would be better off to let someone smoke on the balconies. More ventilation out there! I told Disney that too!

This was a point brought out when they went smoke free. It appears that what was predicted has come to fruition.

Not sure about as to whether Disney O&Os have dedicated smoking rooms or not, but over at Shades of Green (like all U.S. Government-owned facilities), smoking is strictly forbidden -- with no "gray areas" about the rules.

That, IMO, makes for a much better lodging experience (that should be spread throughout the industry -- Disney included).

Does that go true for military bases?? Or is it "selective"?

Smokers really have no rights. I would hate to be a smoker now. I feel bad for them. A long time ago, you would be hung for telling people not to smoke. Now you'll be hung if you do.

Just to let you know it is not only POP with the problem, This same thing happened to me and my family during a Christmas WDW trip we were staying at the Contemporary (they were halfway done with the renovations so I guess this was 2 years ago or so), I had requested a non smoking room because my youngest DD has asthma, well we got to the room and the smoke smell was awful, it was so bad that when you opened the closet and the cabinet where the fridge was you got a nice whiff of smoke. Of course we got a different room a few doors down and this one was not as bad,but I swear the smoke was traveling into the room from the one a few doors down. Of course the damage was already done my DD spent 3 days doing nebulizer treatments because of the exposure. I was so dissappointed and my DD was so traumatized we have not stayed at the Contemporary since.

I am so sorry you had a problem with smoke in the room! I have severe allergies/borderline asthma and smoke also gets me sick.

I know we're not supposed to discuss the pros/cons of smoking on this board so I won't. But what I will say is that people should obey the rules. If you can't obey the rules, expect to be fined/asked to stop/asked to leave. :)

Most hotels and apartments do have a few rooms , (usually 2-4 located on the same floor. In cases like those it is much easier for management to determine where the smoke is coming from.

Unfortanately Pop has 16 rooms that share the system. 4 of the rooms on each of the 4 floors are all connected. It is much harder to track down where the smoke is coming from. 1 smoker at Pop can effect 15 other rooms.

When the ventilation system is only hooked to 1 other room a smoker would only effect 1 other room.

Pop really has a problem because 16 rooms are connected.

Most likely because then Disney would have to evacuate the entire building (upsetting hundreds of guests in the process), etc. just to find out someone has been smoking in a room. That would cost them too much time & money.

Not to start a fire or anything with you EJ, but they could evacuate me from my room day or night if it would help find someone who would disregard the well being of others for their own personal gratification. Thats just the way I feel!!!

Although I don't smoke, I do think they should have smoking rooms or sections. Smoking is an addiction and like any addiction will make people do crazy things. I have never herd of more horror stories from non-smokers, until places went smoke free.

The theory is good but the problem with that is that Disney would be making housekeeping, mantainence, bellhops etc, go into a room that is potential a health risk. What if the housekeeper has asthma, CF or was allergic to smoke and was being forced to work in that condition?

Now, if Disney had persons whom were willing to go in and clean and then a few years later those same people came to them and said " working in those condition caused me cancer" . Disney would be leaving themselves open to lawsuits:scared1: So pleasing the guest isn't the only really they chose to go smoke free!

Is there any way for a guest to seal off the vent to prevent this from happening? It's just the bathroom vent that is the problem right?

We're leaving for Pop in two days, and I have to say this would really create a problem for me. I'll take my allergy medication which would help, but I will get sick if smoke comes into the room.

Things I find odd about all of this smoking.

A. Disney claimed that they could not fill the 10% of smokeing rooms they had.

B. That non-smokers are surprised that when all the smokeing was banned and the smokers went "underground" and started smokeing everywhere.

C. That non-smokers haven't figured out the best thing to do at this point would be to complain to Disney that there aren't smokeing rooms to accomodate the smokers so they don't bother the non-smokers.

The whole polocy seems to have made the situatiion worst not better. I brought up the idea of Disney haveing a smokers resort months ago. At the time it seemed like a bad idea to a great many folks here on the Dis. I'm wondering now that the issue has been around a while, Does anyone find this a good idea now???

Just think of it, giant ash trays and cigarette packs! Big money from corporate sponcers! Oh well, just a idea :lmao:

We had connecting rooms at POP last Aug. While my kids were sleeping in one room I notice a cigarrette smoke smell coming from their room. I got up to see my children sleeping soundly (good thing the 8 year olds weren't smoking). I couldn't narrow down where the smoke was coming from. We had the bathroom door cracked slightly with the light on in case they had to get up in the middle of the night. I only noticed it that one night and not again. My kids don't have allergies but they all detest that smoke smell!

When this happened to us, and no other rooms were available, they unhooked the vents and stuffed it with a towel. Apparently they had to do this alot at Pop!

It did work but, when you had to go to the bathroom for a number 2 you had that smell to content with! Then when you had a shower, the entire room steamed up from moisture!

You are darned either way!

If I were going to be staying at Pop, I think I'd be taking along a sheet of heavy plastic and something to fasten it with over the vent in the bathroom. Based on all the posts I've read on the subject, that seems to be the source of the smoke smell in the rooms.

Eh, probably not. That's steam, not smoke.

Realistically, if the airlines can install smoke detectors in the bathrooms that don't require evacuating the plane to find the guilty party :lmao:, why can't Disney do the same - at least in locations like Pop Century, where cheaters tend to smoke in the bathroom and that room is on the same vent system as fifteen other rooms?

They sell little travel sized bottles of Oust! room deodorizor. Get some and take it with you, it works great!:thumbsup2 I have mine for my trip next month, because I will be sharing a bathroom with my 16yr old nephew. And you know nothing coming out of him will smell like roses!

Maybe I should stay at the POP next time and then I wouldnt need to buy smokes then. Just puff the air vents LOL.

We had the same problem at Pop C. The vent system allows smoke from other rooms to enter your room, they said the system was linked to the whole building. After 3 days of complaints they eventually moved us to other rooms but by then the resort had lost its magic. We upgraded to CBR which was fantastic and no smokey room!

I have stayed in a hotel where the steam from the shower set off a smoke alarm. Not a very nice way to start a day!

I just spent a night in a Fairfield Inn, a smoke free hotel. Their policy is made very clear, there is a $250 fee if you smoke in your room. How they monitor this, I don't know. I do know I didn't smell smoke anywhere inside the hotel especially in my room. If Disney advertises their resort hotels as smoke free then they should have a plan/policy on how they are going to enforce this or go back to having smoking rooms/buildings, PERIOD.
