That is what we did and it worked fine. On the way back they have buses at FW to take you back to SSR (but they are combined service, so they stop at OKW and POR too).
The other option is to walk to DTD, and catch a bus from there. Then, you have no stops (other than where the bus stops on its own). That works out great as well!

but would not the FW bus just go to the "front" of FW, then you have to get an internal FW bus to get to hoop de do? that's 2 busses in the trip, I think the boat would be much nicer.
And a personal tip from an unfortunate experience, if you go the bus route, do NOT get off at VWL you need the campground..
I wouldn't want to tell the OP something wrong, so hopefully, someone with more experience can respond.
However, when we did it, the bus went through multiple stops at FW. The poor bus driver was getting sick of us asking if this was our stop or not. I'd like to know if something's changed, as we eat at Trail's End sometimes, and usually catch the bus from DTD.
We've done this a few times. It was less than ten dollars for the six of us, (well not including the tip) but it saved us over an hour of travel time. Very worth it, in our opinion!!
This December we took the SSR bus to DTD and then transferred from there. Yes you have to get on another "internal" bus at Ft. Wilderness that stops MANY times. It took us- now this i s no lie- 2 hours and 10 minutes!!!!! We arrived at HDDR at 5:20 for the 5:00 show. But good thing was the salad was just being served and there was only one table left- right in front of the stage. We will from now on take the bus to MK and boat like we have done before.
Here's a great link to a site that can tell you how to get anywhere on property using Disney Transportation. Even tells you how long it will take to get there.
Sounds like a winner! This would be much easier than stopping mulitple times from DTD like we did.
Also, isn't HD right beside Trail's End (or close to it)? We'll be eating there during spring break, and I think taking a bus from BCV to MK and a boat over sounds like the best option. I can't recall the location, though, as we've only been there once.
