Best way to change reservation between hotels (room-only)

OK, let's get one thing straight: Martin is an idiot.

I wanted to book AoA Mermaid for a friend and I in Oct. I had a Disney Visa card coming, so I waited. I get the card, and one of the three nights is full. I have tried and tried (I have the link to check for a room on a button... is that sad or what?), but no joy. :headache:

So I have finally panicked and reserved Pop. :) Yay, that's done. Or is it? :rotfl:

Here's my question: if I keep checking, and a room opens up at AoA Mermaid, what's the best way to change the reservation? If I let it sit any time, it will be gone.

1. Should I make a new reservation online immediately and cancel the old one? Do I have to call to cancel it?
2. Should I call and have them switch hotels for me?
3. Should I just be happy with what I have and simply walk over to AoA and look around?

I read a lot of threads, and you guys are the experts at changing stuff ;) ... what's the scoop?

You can call and have them switch hotels for you! It's super simple! Those of us in the Resort Changers thread do this all the time. ;)

It's easy to modify a reservation if the type of reservation stays the same. With that said, if you see AoA available online, it's probably best to book it at that time, pay another deposit, and then call and cancel the POP ressie. You do have to call to modify a ressie or cancel, but I wouldn't chance it to modify the existing ressie because by the time you call and get through to a CM, the room could be gone. Good luck.

The reason I'm worried about calling is that it will take too long and the availability will be gone. I can click click click and the new reservation is done, but doing it on the phone isn't quite so speedy (bless their hearts in Reservations). :)

Go ahead and book POP if you haven't yet. This is just in case AoA doesn't open up on that one night you needed, at least you have a place to stay. If AoA does open up for your date, they will move your deposit at POP to AoA. Your AoA reservation # will stay the same. All they are doing is adding one night to your current reservation. Good luck! I hope you will get to stay at AoA for your whole trip! :)

We're all over here "helping" I love it.....:grouphug:

To the OP see if the room is available if you extend you trip to maybe a week. Sometimes you can get the room for a week and then cancel a few nights. I know it sounds crazy but we did it one year when we wanted WL. The told us that the room type wasn't available for one of the nights but when we changed the length of stay, the room was available.

One of us had to come help out. It's our expertise. :rotfl:
Seriously, I think 90% of the people on DIS are ressie changers: you folks are just honest about it. ;) I do appreciate the advice from people who have the knowledge. If you need advice on rollercoasters, come see me! :)

Now both Wed and Thurs are not available at AoA Mermaid. Looks like Pop it is, but we can just stroll across the bridge and check it out. :)

Thanks for everyone's help!

A quick update on my reservation. I kept checking, using my handy-dandy button, and no joy. I checked the individual days, and they were constantly switching between available and not available. But never all three available at once.

Then last week I hit the button, and Little Mermaid popped up for my whole 3-day stay. Couldn't believe it, but let's save the disbelief for later. :) I went ahead and made another reservation, added Magical Express, and paid the deposit. The next day I called up and canceled the Pop Century reservation, easy as pie.

So all's well that ends well (as long as the Little Mermaid rooms DO open on Sept 15!). Persistence was the key, but I'm sure you Room Changer Lifetime Members know that! :) Thanks again for the advice.
