Best way to book Aulani?

Hello, We would love to stay at Aulani even though its not our home resort. My plan would be to book our home resort at 11 months out and hope to switch at 7 months out. The tricky parts seem to be finding reasonable airfare. If we find airfare we can live with, do we book and hope DVC has availability? Or do you book DVC and then hope you find affordable airfare for the dates you booked?

We are getting ready to go to Aulani in a few weeks. :) We booked our room first and then watched for airfare. I figured we could cancel our Aulani trip pretty easily but would be out a bunch of money if we booked air and then couldn't get accommodations. I wasn't willing to stay somewhere else in Oahu. We have been to Hawaii a few times, and this time we are going to Oahu because of Aulani. We do own there though, so I can't speak to availability but depending on time of year and type of room you're wanting, I bet you have a good chance of getting Aulani if you're flexible. Good luck!

I would book first and then go for the airfare. Even at the 11 month mark we would wait.

We booked Aulani and then stalked the airfares until we found a good one.

We are heading for our second trip and both times I booked at the 7 month window once in May/June the second coming up in September and had no issue booking. I left open a couple of options for rooms/views so that helped with the options.

Then booked airfare which I watched over a few months to understand average price, high price, and then jumped when I saw what I figured would be the best airfare rates. Good luck and it's a great place

Looking at Aulani for November 2015-I might book as cash and then change to DVC points at the 7 month mark if that is possible. We can't wait to go! Of course, we are adding DL prior so we get alot of Disney Magic! I think because it is finished there should be enough rooms. Good luck!

We used frequent flyer miles to get to Oahu for the 4 of us and my FIL, so I had to book the flights way before booking Aulani. We went in October and weren't picky about the view. I booked Aulani right at 7mos and didn't have any trouble getting what we wanted (2bdrm dedicated island/garden view). When I checked months later, there were still rooms available for our dates. I'd say it completely depends on when you are going.

I would definitely book Aulani FIRST then book flights so as to not be stuck with expensive airfare. And since Aulani is a world away from WDW I wouldn't bother booking WDW at 11 months either. If I'm planning Hawaii I'm planning Hawaii. There would still be plenty of options left at 7 months for WDW if our plans changed. To me it would just be an unnecessary step and then ANOTHER unnecessary step to cancel that reservation.

I think early June at Aulani is harder than later in the month when the points go up….of course availability could be harder if you're planning to overlap with July 4th too. I have booked studios at Aulani for August 2x now by being online promptly at 8:00 and ready to hit submit when the clock turned to 8:00. First time an OV then this time an IV because we had fewer points to work with this time. You should be prepared to be flexible with what category you book. The lower point values seem to go before OV. I booked this trip for last August at 7 months and then at 8 days before we were to leave our DS had a medical emergency and wasn't allowed to fly so we had to cancel everything.:scared: We ultimately ended up finding availability at WDW for 9 nights and drove down there instead so we wouldn't lose all of our points (they would've gone into holding and had to be used up by Nov. due to our UY).

We are also stopping at DL on the way to Hawaii and have managed to book a studio there 2x as well. I did "walk" that reservation both times tho since there are so few studios at VGC and getting that booked first was crucial to the entire plan. Everything hinged on getting that first. (I booked a week starting a few days ahead of when we really hoped to arrive then canceled off the first few nights later.) We leave in just under a month and now that we're so close I'm almost regretting adding DL because of the price of the park tix. The prices have gone up 2x I think since I bought tix for last summer. After being spoiled with our WDW AP price this seems RIDICULOUS. It will cost us just a few $$ shy of $800 for 3 days of park hoppers for 3 adults. :sad2: Last year I bought 4 days of hoppers for $825. They have really gotten expensive there. Stopping in LA for a few nights also added to the cost of our flights so be sure to look ahead at all of that before deciding what to do and be prepared to shell out a wad for flights. They have also gone up a lot since last year. The main reason we re-planned this trip was because most of our airfare that I booked last year was on Alaska Air and when we canceled last year they gave us credit for the flights good for 1 year!! Since we'd already spent over $2K for those flights it seemed silly to just waste it. But everything else has gone up since. I had to completely rebook our flight from LAX to HNL becuz that was on a diff. airline and I paid 2x as much this year as what we paid last year. We're also going to Maui for a few nights and that inter-island flight went up as well. I would say if you can go next year do it before it gets even MORE expensive.

Thanks for all the info. So much to think about. My DH & I went to Hawaii once, but our kids haven't been. Aulani looks so beautiful, we really would love to go! It's just so expensive! Going to WDW certainly can be expensive, but we always make it work. Time to sharpen my pencil....

Maybe because we are on the west coast so tickets to Orlando are also pricey, but I don't feel like a week at Aulani will cost us significantly more than a week in WDW. The flights are more expensive (300-400 for FL, 500-700 for HI) but I feel like that evens out with the cost of tickets to the parks. We are much more likely too cook in Hawaii than at WDW, so even with higher food costs, I think at worst it's even, probably cheaper in HI.

I would absolutely secure Aulani before buying airfare. You could watch the prices in the meantime so you know when to book. I know I can easily get a non stop flight from Phoenix for 650-700 and I know if I see something under $500 to grab it right away. I'm hoping for 500-550, but would really like flights under 500.
