Best "Warm Up" Rides for a Nervous Guest?

My DH is a bit nervous about bigger rides (I adore them on the whole, unless there's a vertical drop, so I'm happy to start on the biggest as soon as we hit the park). Previously visiting a theme park, I took him on what I considered a "moderate" ride, which made him feel sick because there was lots of spinning (despite him not getting motion sickness normally!) and put him off anything remotely scary looking for the rest of the weekend.

Which rides would you recommend to him for each park? I'm hoping to ease him in (and failing that, will be using the single rider lines as much as possible if I have to leave him behind!!) and want him to enjoy his experience with me, not watching me!

Thanks in advance! :)

MK - Goofys Barnstormer
AK - Dinosaur
Epcot - Soarin
DHS - dunno
BB - Teamboat Springs
TL - any of the tube slides

Barnstormer, Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Buzz, Maelstrom, Soarin', Safari, Great Movie Ride, Toy Story (if you can get in).

My fiance is not a big ride person, he has slowly worked his way up. He also has problems with motion sickness.

EPCOT: maelstrom, spaceship earth, The Land
HS: Toy Story Mania, Great Movie Ride
AK: Rapids, Dinosaur although Dino is very dark and jumpy it is his all time Disney favorite which shocked me! - he also loves the Bug movie - Primeval Whirl which is a bit jerky, safari ride
MK: Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Jungle Cruise, Buzz, Peter Pan, actually got him on Space Mountain which he thinks is okay because he can't see what is coming (go figure!)

He sounds like me. I don't particularly care for the big rides. I was terrified of Tower of Terror for years. I will willingly go on it now but I'm not at all sad if we miss it. But spinning also puts me off my lunch.

At MK he should definitely avoid the tea cups. That is the only ride at MK I absolutely refuse to go on. Goofy's Barnstormer is a little kiddie coaster that would be good to start him off on. BTMRR and Space Mountain are the biggest coasters at MK but are still both pretty mild though Space Mountain seems much worse than it is because it is pitch black in there and quite rough. Splash Mountain really only has the one drop and the rest of it is just a water ride like IASM. He should be fine with everything else there.

EPCOT is more tame than the other parks. He will probably want to avoid Mission Space and perhaps Test Track but other than that he should be good to go. Soarin' should only be a problem if he is afraid of heights.

DHS is trickier. This park doesn't have as many rides as the others but Great Movie ride, Toy Story, and Backlot Tour would all be fine. Tower of Terror and Rock n' Roller Coaster is as big as it gets in Disney World so he will probably want to avoid those. Star Tours provides an interesting conundrum. I always liked that ride but some with motion sickness problems don't handle it well.

I know less about AK but EE is somewhat similar in intensity to BTMRR with the exception of the backwards section so if he did fine on BTMRR then he will probably be ok on EE. Dinosaur is great fun though quite bumpy and rough so if bouncing doesn't bother him it's a good bet he will like this one. I haven't ever been on Kali River Rapids so have no advice to offer there.

My Dad and my sister HATE thrill rides. My Dad gets motion sickness (on rides only) very easily and my sister's just kind of boring. :P

My Dad's top 2 favorite rides are Splash Mountain and TOT.

Splash doesn't get him sick, and it's fun to get the "Thrill" of the "big drop" (which feels like it gets smaller every time I see it!) Having him know that he rode what's considered the "scariest" ride in MK might give him confidence to try the other two coasters! I'd recommend BTMR before Space as my Dad stopped riding Space due to motion sickness many years ago. Barnstormer is a great warm up coaster if you think he needs one.

I don't know how you'd feel about Tower of Terror, I can't do "Giant Drop" rides at Six Flags, but ToT is my absolute favorite and I never get scared since I'm enclosed in the big building. The detail and production rides are absolutely beautiful, even if you don't like the drop part! My Dad never gets sick on this ride! If you can muster up the courage, I'd say you should both give it a try! :)

I'd also say he'll probably be good for Test Track at Epcot. All it does is go really really fast, but he's probably driven a car down a highway faster than the TT car goes.

Someone said to avoid MissionSpace. This is very true if you ride the Orange side. The GREEN side is very much doable. I did the orange side thinking, It's Disney. How bad could it be? Well, pretty bad. I wasn't right for several minutes after that ended. A bit nauseous. Have done the green side ever since and it's fun. When you walk up, tell the CM you want the GREEN voucher and you're all set for a more pleasant experience. Also, TestTrack shouldn't be an issue either. The thrill here is just the speed of the car around the track. Nothing over the top at all.

My son (18) does not usually like thrill rides either, but he does enjoy Star Tours, Big Thunder, and Splash Mountain. Unfortunately, the only way to find out if you like a ride is to try it. I wouldn't try to "trick" your DH into riding anything, just be honest and let him know how intense the ride is and let him make the decision for himself. My son has tried just about everything (except RnRC, which he flat out refuses and which I know he wouldn't enjoy), but the three above are the only ones he ended up liking.

Thank you all, this is very helpful. I hope to build his confidence as I suspect he'll enjoy most of the rides... :-)

I would avoid Goofys Barnstormer (to small), Dinosaur (awful ride and not for the faint of heart).

Would advise:

AK - Safari
DHS - Toy Story Mania, Fantasmic (not a ride of course). Avoid Tower of terror
Epcot - SOARIN. Though there is a height thing
MK - Haunted Mansion, Pirates

I know that even the green side of mission space made me queasy. I think it partly had to do with the small enclosed space as well. I think Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a good roller coaster ride that's not too intense. If you can do Space Mountain you can do that.

The Mummy isn't at Disney, it is at Universal.

Magic Kingdom, I would say the ones to save for last are Big Thunder, Splash, and Space Mountain . . . if you are trying to avoid spinning, you might want to steer clear of the Tea Cups, and Astro Orbiter.

To warm up for those bigger thrills, try Pirates of the Caribbean which features a small slide, and maybe goofy's barnstormer which is pretty much a kiddie coaster. The rest of the rides are pretty tame.

Epcot, I think he should be pretty ok with most of the rides. I would say stay away from the spinning side of Mission Space. Test Track is pretty fast, but it is like being in a car, not too scary.

Soarin' goes up in the air a bit, but once you are up in place it is a pretty calm ride. The only other ride in EPCOT that is remotely thrilling is the Maelstrom. If he survives the slide in Pirates, then Maelstrom should be fine.

Animal Kingdom, I would say probably stay away from Triceratops Spin, as that not only has drops in it, but it spins pretty wildly. Expedition Everest is the one to build up to in this park. Dinosaur is dark, rough, and loud.

Here, if he did ok on Pirates, or Maelstrom, then he should be fine on Kali River Rapids (def fast pass this one, the line gets quite long), the safari is a winner, and though it isn't a ride, if it is open I strongly suggest the Festival of the Lion King show. I think it is perhaps the best show in all of Disney World.

Disney Hollywood Studios. Tower of Terror . . . the name says it all lol. Rock 'N' Roller Coaster, it is fast, dark, and has inversions.

The rest of the park is pretty tame. Star Tours is a good test ride, it is a motion simulator, with a 3d movie which makes it look like you are flying through space. It was more than enough to freak my daughter out lol.

What is he anxious about? Is it the drop or speed of coasters, or the fear of motion sickness or the jerking action of some rides. There are tons of wonderful low thrill rides that anyone (even my total chicken DH) will enjoy. Those include things like the Safari, Pirates of the Caribbean, Spaceship Earth etc. These however are not really going to prepare him for things like Space Mountain. There are rides like Dinosaur and Star Tours that are rough and jerky, but nothing like a coaster and won't really prepare him for coasters. Test Track is fast, but nothing like a coaster. When DS was little, we started him out on BTMR with the option of moving on up to Space and EE if he liked it. That is a pretty good progression, but Rock and Roller Coaster is so different from the others that he may love one and not the other. Try letting him watch utubes of the rides, and watch them in action and then let him decide. DH does none of the bigger trill rides and still LOVES WDW.

I must be a real wimp-to me, Barnstormer is definitely a no-no. I think it's the loops and turns. I go on Splash Mountain and love it-but that goes straight. Triceratop Spin only drops if HE wants it to (control lever). I just crank it up as high as it will go and enjoy the view.

I think this is a good question. What is it he doesn't like about rides? For instance, I will ride BTMR, Splash Mountain, EE, or Manta (Sea World) all day, but don't really care for RocknRoller Coaster or Space Mountain because they seem to jerk me around more. I also don't like to ride if I can't be up near the front because the jerking seems to be worse in the back.

Most of Disney is very tame from a roller coaster standpoint.

You've really only got 5 true roller coasters to worry about:
Expedition Everest (AK)
- intense, fast - 50mph, starts out ok, but then suddenly, goes backwards very fast, gets very high off the ground, is 200 ft tall, has an 80ft drop, outdoor coaster which goes through some dark cave sections. It freaked out my friend whose a guy and says Barnstormer is more his speed.

Rock n Roller Coaster (HS)
- intense, fast - 57mph, 5G's, only Disney coaster to go upside down (twice, plus one corkscrew), indoor coaster, black lights in a dark room, can't tell how high you are due to lighting.

Space Mountain (MK)
- intense, seems faster than it is due to the intense darkness only 30mph, black lights in dark room, cant really see track, doesn't go upside down but do to extreme quick turns and the pitch blackness you may feel as if you are, it's very disorienting and hard to tell which way you are going, one 35 ft drop.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (MK)
- less intense, outdoor coaster, doesn't get too high off the ground, although a few sections you are up in the air, 45ft height, consistently goes about the same speed 30mph, has a few intense drops and turns, but overall much tamer than the first three mentioned, still pretty fast though, not a kiddy coaster

Barnstormer
- less intense than the railroad, outdoor coaster, not too high 30ft, not extremely fast 20mph, short ride less than a minute with only about 20 seconds of that being the ride part of the coaster, as a-posed to loading/unloading, positioning, mainly small turns and dips, more of a Jr. coaster. I wouldn't call it a kiddy coaster because to me those are the really small ones that go in a little circle with just a few humps. This is a coaster, just a much smaller very short one.

Beyond the roller coasters the following are other rides that are seen by some as intense, scary, or that cause motion sickness
Dinosaur (AK)
- bumpy, jerking, dark room ride, where things pop out at you. There are unexpected drops and turns, the ride starts out slow than gains speed towards the end. Main issues people have with it are fear of man eating dinosaurs, especially in young kids, and motion sickness due to jerking.

Primeval Whirl (AK)
Typical crazy mouse carnival ride, jerky turns but relatively tame

Tower of Terror (HS)
Free fall indoor ride, but really it isn't a "free fall" since the ride actually falls faster than the speed of gravity, you wear a seatbelt that literally pulls you down as you fall, the ride is 199ft tall, you are sort of sling shot up and down it for about 3 minutes, the ride drops randomly, sometimes you go all the way to the top, then fall, sometimes you only move up a few floors before falling, doors open and close randomly to give you staggering view if the park from above, although everything happens so fast you don't have time to take much of the view in. Turns people off due to the height, speed, and motion sickness. I personally think it jerks you down as you "fall" and is painful to me because of that. Even though I like other similar free fall rides that actually let you fall, I can't stand ToT as it always causes me pain, but I know others who it doesn't hurt at all, so it just may be me.

Star Tours (HS)
Bumpy 3D simulator ride can cause motion sickness but not scary unless Darth Vader freaks you out.

Mission Space (Epcot)
Simulator ride, issues are claustrophobia due to the very small inclosed seats, you are inclosed on pretty much all sides, and motion sickness, there are two versions - green no g-forces, orange with g-forces similar to those experienced by real astronauts leaving earth's atmosphere

Test track (Epcot)
Track car ride, most of it goes slower, but some areas speed up, curve fast, or are extra bumpy or jerky for effect, you are "testing" your car, although the old version made this more obvious, there is only one really fast spot at the end, where your speed reaches 65mph for like half a second. This would probably be a good first "roller coaster" with only the one really fast short part at the end.

Soar'n (Epcot)
Hang gliding simulator ride, very calm, not scary unless you are afraid of simulated heights, but can cause motion sickness

Splash Mountain (MK)
Water log ride, a few small dark drops indoors, but no scary theming, 1 large 5 story drop at the end.

Tea Cups (MK)
Spinning can cause motion sickness

Astro Orbiter (MK)
Very heigh off the ground, can see most of park from the ride as well as some of the nearby hotels, not good for people who fear heights, fast but only goes around in a circle similar to dumbo just faster, so it can cause motion sickness as well.

I'd hit all the safe rides not listed here first.
Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story Mania, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Spaceship Earth, to name a few

Then the ones marked above just for motion sickness if that is not an issue for him
For instance, Soar'n, the Tea Cups, Star Tours, and any rides that just go in a circle (Tricera Tops Spin, Magic Carpets, Dumbo)

Then go a little bit more intense try Test Track, Splash Mountain, Dinosaur.

Which should get you ready for Barnstormer and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

If those go ok, then try the other real roller coasters based on what will freak him out the least, going backwards, being up high, upside down, in total blackness, etc. Save ToT for this last grouping as well.

And until you know how he will respond to g-forces , I'd stick with Mission Space green.
