we want to buy a touchscreen computer in the hopes that our autistic son can learn to use it...can you also use a mouse with these? Hoping not to spend too much $$$$, any recommendations?

when our old computer died we got a touchscreen - a couple of weeks ago. We bought a Gateway from Best Buy. The box is put in storage and I don't recall all the details, but I did compare memory, etc among touchscreens and CPUs when I was there. We are so far very happy with it. I have not yet gotten everything fully up and running (printer, photo software, etc), but that is because of lack of time not computer issues. The setup was like 5 minutes - literally take it out of the box and plug it in. The one we bought has wireless internet reception built in (I would imagine most computers these days do). And it came with both a mouse and a keyboard (wireless)

You might want to look at the apple iPad when it comes out next month.......it could be his and very portable.

But restricted to running just Apple Store Apps, not really the best financial decision IMO.

I would look for a HP All-In-One, it will probably be exactly what you're looking for.

We have the HP TouchSmart 300. DH purchased it a couple of weeks ago for almost $1000.00 at Walmart.

I cringe at the price, but it works nice.

We don't use the touchscreen, as DH has a "thing" with finger smudges. But the touchscreen part works great.

It does come with a wireless mouse. So you can use either the mouse or the touchscreen.

The cool thing is that there is only one cord for the entire computer. After fighting with a zillion cords on our last Dell, this is great!

It got wonderful reviews.

If I were getting a touchscreen the only one I would consider is the Lenovo X-Series.

I don't know if the OP was looking for a notebook in particular or a desktop. I think with a kid, although a notebook sounds great, I'm not sure its the best idea considering it might get dropped, etc (and unless it's a toughbook, it will probably break upon dropping).
