Best time to visit Washington DC on vacation?

Think my sis and I might try to head to DC in 2007. For those of you who either live there or ahve visited, when would you recommend we go? We'll most likely be doing public transportation (Metro, etc), visiting the museums and monuments, don't want it too hot or too cold or too awful crowded. I'm thinking soemtime in late spring or early fall, but I just don't know. Suggestions??? TIA!

Sure wish we could go soon because I saw some great deals for hotels on Travel Zoo, but gotta save up the $$ first. Could get the Hyatt Arlington for $79/night in March!!!

I would suggest sometime in late spring, but avoid spring vacation. There are lots of flowers in bloom and the weather is pleasant (usually). If you go before Memorial Day weekend you'll avoid the summer crowds and heat. March can be nice, but it can also be cold. Early fall would be nice, too, but I really like the way so many plants are flowering in the spring.

I agree with T&B. I love it here in the spring. I think the weather is perfect in April and May, the humidity hasn't kicked in yet so you can actually enjoy being outdoors. I would avoid the cherry blossom festival (which I think is around april 9th) cause that is pretty crowded, but other than that it's not too bed.

I agree with the previous posters. Late spring and early fall are great. Do avoid spring break for the schools and the Cherry Blossom Festival. The only draw back with these times are the museums close at 5 instead of 9, but there is plenty to do other than the museums.

if i were coming to visit i would come in october. less crowds and better weather than any time in spring (generally). you miss out on the cherry blossoms, but that's not the main reasoin to see dc imho.

I agree with caitycaity. There are a lot of school field trips in the spring, especially to the Smithsonian.
