Best time to ride FEA without a FP

So pretty self-explanatory. I am going to be in WDW for 6 days, but because I plan on upgrading my ticket to an AP when I arrive, I only brought a 5-day park hopper ticket (at the time I also wasn't sure if I was going to be going to the parks all days or skip a day) so that means that I wasn't able to secure FPs for my first Epcot day. I know I am in the minority lol, but I really enjoy FEA and I already have a FP for another day, but still want to try to ride it on my first day as well. I am just wondering, what time of the day do you suggest other than RD or closing?

Plan A is always Rope Drop-
Arrive at the gates 30-45 minutes before Epcot opening time.

Plan B-
Try within the last 30 minutes before park closing time.

If you cannot do those...
you'll be waiting.

Not the exact answer to your question, but I would recommend still trying to get a FP even day of for FEA. The changes in the FP rules have made it much easier to get some of the high priority FP same day, if you are willing to refresh on the app constantly. I don't know how large your party is, but around 12:30 today I managed to find a FEA for for 2:10 for 2 people just by modifying and refreshing the app for about 3 minutes.

Good luck!

I am still planning on trying to get one. I was just asking in case I am unsuccessful.

How are wait times for early morning hours? I have an ADR @ Garden Grill are 9am and wanted to know if I'd be able to make it if I tried Frozen right away.

I think the mania has faded quite a bit. On July 8, I walked on at 10:15. We went over on a lark just to see, and there was no line at all. We walked back by later in the day, and the line was totally inside the building.

Not saying it will be the same for you, but that was our experience.

BTW, I found the projected faces quite creepy.

The only route at rope drop is around the north side of the lagoon (thru UK and Canada, then on to Mexico and Norway).

You don't need to rope drop to ride FEA, not even close. You certainly want to be there before about 10:00 to 10:30am, but no need to stand at the gates 45 minutes early. They don't give out FP+ until 11am, so the first 2 hours are nothing but standby. We were just there in July, including 4th of July week. We rode it standby on several occasions, between 9:10 and 9:45am. Once, we waited literally 3 minutes and once we waited 8 minutes (timed by the Lines app). That included the amount of time it took us to walk through the queue, because I start the timer when we are still outside and just about to walk to where the FP+ tap point is. The 3 minute wait was more like 90 seconds, because it takes a minute to walk through the empty queue. We pretty much walked right on. We had that same experience last summer, only two weeks after the ride opened. The first hour or so is very easy to get on via standby.

I agree the first hour or two after opening shouldn't be bad but the line will build up at some point. Earlier is better.

We arrived at Epcot around 9:30 (park opened@9), headed to FEA and waited 45 minutes in standby. It wasn't a big deal for us to wait, it was our first time riding it. I wouldn't wait in standby for longer than that next time though.

Has anyone gone early during extra magic hours? Is it worth getting there early or does the line actually due down around 9 am?

Curious, when was that? Was there EMH that morning? Not at all doubting you, but I'm surprised. We've done it 4 different times that I can recall, dating back to last summer and never waited that long.
