Best time to make room request?

I've always been fuzzy on when the best time to make a specific room request is (for example being in the north tower/even room at BLT). Is this something you usually bring up at checkin, or do you call MS before that?

You add it to your reservation when you book it.

No, I do it when I book so I don't forget.

DVC has told us many times we are NOT allowed to make fax requests to the resort directly, so we always make our requests when we book. That way they are on the reservation right away.
