Dexter Jackson, safety for the Bucs was named MVP of Superbowl XXXVII. But he didn’t get to do the WDW or DL commercial. Instead, Disney selected Brad Johnston (QB) and Jon Gruden to do the Disney ads. So this is what he had to say about it in the Tampa Tribune:

“Dexter Jackson received his choice of Cadillac that comes with the award, deciding on an Escalade.

But that still didn't stop him from expressing his displeasure, albeit humorously, for not getting the keys to the Magic Kingdom. Quarterback Brad Johnson was the Bucs player chosen to represent the team Tuesday at Disneyland.

"I'm a little disappointed,'' Jackson said. "I always wanted to hang out with Mickey Mouse and the guys. I wasn't selected, but that's fine. I can ride by Disneyland in my new Cadillac. I'll toot my horn when I ride by Disneyland. I'll go to Six Flags or somewhere.'' "

I'm not sure if this has changed, but in the past, Disney has made agreements with certain players on both teams in advance. Then they get the guys from the winning team to actually do the ad.

I'd be surprised if this was any different. It would be a bit difficult to negotiate a deal in the minutes following the Super Bowl, and certainly Dexter Jackson would not have made anybody's short list of likely MVP candidates prior to the game.

If that was the case, they should have picked Derrick Brooks.

Anyway, I seem to remember the ads being specifically for the MVP, prior to Ray Lewis. I thought that his alleged criminal issues caused Disney to go with Trent Dilfer that year, bypassing the MVP for the first time. Of course, I could be wrong about this.

BTW, do you think Dexter is in car 4? Maybe his Cadillac Escalade IS car 4! ;)

I remember when there was some flak when Jerry Rice got the MVP, but Joe Montana got the Disney commercial, and that's when I first heard of the "pre-arranged" deal.

I don't think Dexter is even in a Disney car at all...

It seems like it's the QB who usually gets the invite.
I've never heard any official policy on it. And I'm sure Disney won't tell. SF is sending Dexter to SFMM, a 5 hour flight. They could have sent him to Atlanta, much closer.

Edit: Just found out he's going to SFMM because SFOG is closed, and that Disney may pick the person with the most name recognition.

you can thank good old mr eisner, for picking the players who do the wdw and dl spots for the superbowl, during the week leading up to the superbowl disney sends people to interact with the player and get some insight on if are fit to represent disney, on gameday good old mikie sits in his box suite and then at the end of the game makes a call down to the disney officials on the sidelines to say who he wants to represent disney.

Don't kid yourself. He doesn't do it all by himself. He gets a list, a bunch of observations, and a series of recommendations. And he choses. With the help of many.

So far, the only choice I haven't agreed with was the year Green Bay won. I desperately wanted to have Brett Favre down here, but alas ... he wasn't the chosen one!

Good points.
SF assumes it's the MVP that gets the award by inviting Dexter Jackson to SFMM. It's not the MVP. It's like SF is dictating the rules and telling Disney how to pick their own person, based on an assumption it's the MVP.
And if you look at the article, it's Dexter that makes the remark assuming it's the MVP when he says, ""I'll just toot my horn on the way to Six Flags." He said that the next day when he was picking up his Cadillac.
Dexter is scheduled to visit SFMM Feb 8th. I wonder if Disney will make a response saying they pick the person in advance based on name recognition before the game? I think they should to clear it up, otherwise, SF and Dexter Jackson have indirectly accused Disney of racism and the GP will never know the truth.
