Best Summer month for Disneyland?

I've been running numbers for December but it might actually be more cost efficient to go during the summer with the deals they have right now...

The main reason I was after December was the crowd levels. How bad is Disneyland summer crowds over the course of a week? Is early August a bad time? Late June? I figure July is probably the worst?

I guess it depends on who you ask, and what you consider crowded, but IMO the crowd levels at DLR in the summer are very manageable.

Of the times you have mentioned, late June will be the most crowded by far. That has not been true historically but it is the new reality. See "Understanding AP Blockouts and Impact on Crowds" http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2365983

Of the summer months July is no worse (or better) than August. This year in mid-July some are concerned about extra crowds because of the baseball All-Star game in Anaheim on July 13.

As far as high season crowds go, summer seems to be pretty moderate on crowds. Spring Break is very crowded, as are holiday periods especially when APs are not blocked.

Finally, often when I read about people who report heavy crowds in the summer at DLR, it seems they do all the wrong things. So I do not put much stock in what some people say.

Here are some other links that may help! :goodvibes

Thanks a lot guys! These are great.

Hmm yeah I'm not sure I could convince my friend or pull off funds THIS fast but I like the idea of a summer trip and being able to use to the pool. (:

I don't think crowds are too bothersome either when you have an entire week. I mean who cares at that point if you don't ride a single thing on a saturday. :confused3

I found early-to-mid December to be outright magical, so unless you love the sun, I'd personally pick that over summer. That said, by December you mean "when school gets out" or even "mostly the weekend", then odds are December would be much more crowded than much of the summer (excepting most of June). We got a way better deal in early December than we did in summer, but we had annual passes and were staying off-site (we don't stay 5 nights, so the "5 for 3" deal has never helped us).

That said, with your attitude, it does sound like you'll be OK in summer. :) The walkways/etc. may (or may not) be more crowded but you'll be OK. If you want summer, I'd pick anytime after the first week of July, through the end of the blockouts in August. Right before blockouts end in August might be the least busy time, as some schools will be in session and most people who want to see World of Color (and who aren't bothered by blockouts) will have already done so. But once those blockouts lift, I'd stay away.

(And if you can possibly swing both, you can do a summer trip, upgrade to an AP at the end of your trip, and then do an early December trip, like we did in 2009. :) )

Have a great trip!

Haha well I was looking at December 8th-15th. My school lets out a week before thanksgiving and does not go back into session until after new years, it's great lol.

The reason why I wish this worked is that both me and my friend that is going with me would save $1000 each. =/

The other issue is that I don't turn 18 until August 14th and she leaves for a trip with her family a week after that and she doesn't want to go right before then. I can't book a hotel at 17....?

I think your December dates are about perfect, but that price difference is steep... I'm not sure where a2,000 difference ($1,000 each) is coming from? Summer is generally rated peak season and your earliest December dates, at least, are not. We didn't even use Entertainment Rate for Hojo and got much cheaper rooms in December. (Of course, we can drive and do 4 nights; our vacations haven't actually cost $2,000 for the whole party put together. :flower3: )

That said, if there's no way to get around the $2,000 difference then of course I'd try to do summer, though I don't know if that is possible in your situation.

Are you figuring to stay in a Disney hotel? If I have the time, I personally would rather have 2 vacations at a cheaper hotel, than one in a more expensive hotel. But some others feel just the opposite. There's no "wrong" way to do Disneyland, after all. (As long as you know how to use Fastpass. ;) )

Woops I meant $1000 savings total not each haha sorry bout that.

Yeah I've never stayed at a Disneyland hotel before so it would be something very cool to try.

Talked to Grace- summer seems out of the question for this visit unless I can convince my mom to go and try to get on the price is right again. :lmao:

I found this and thought you might be able to use it

http://www.disneylandvacationtips.com/disneyland-attendance.html
it tells you how the attendance is during the year.

That chart is outdated, especially with regards to crowds in October. That chart indicates that October is one of the least crowded months, when in fact, in the past couple years, it has grown to have heavy crowds, especially on weekends. I would take the advice of DIS board members over the chart.

Few new questions.....

Is the Howard Johnson the closest good neighbor hotel?

Because wow for the prices of that compared to the Disneyland we could stay LONGER if we wanted...

Is that recommended? Do you think I would miss out on "Disney magic" by skipping a Disneyland hotel? I've never stayed onsite for Disneyland before so that was part of the idea....if it were up to you would you take the Disneyland hotel and a shorter trip or extend the trip and stay at Hojo?

Does magical express service hojo?

Not at all, but a very large number of people on the DISboards prefer it. Customer service is generally good, the rooms are clean, and the walk is fine. If you get the Entertainment Rate ( see http://www.hojoanaheim.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=14 ; you just need to get a valid Entertainment card) you can't beat the prices ($59/night for two full-size beds). We didn't book the Entertainment rate but it was only like $62/night for us without it.

All that said, some of the Disneyland hotel towers are much farther from the gates than the nearest hotels are!

Like I said, that is a personal question. For myself, yes, I'd rather save money and/or have a longer trip and stay off-site. For me this is especially true in December if crowds are lower and the weather is cooler. I'm quite a bit older than you but I still found that in the summer, we NEEDED to go back for a mid-day break because of the crowds/heat/exhaustion. In December, we did NOT take mid-day breaks, and still managed quite full days in the park. (It did rain on the weekend, so granted, that made the thought of trekking back ANYWHERE for a break less appealing.) You still might need to take breaks on the weekend, but maybe not weekdays with shorter hours.

Plus you can also use your cost savings to eat at fancy restaurants, do tours, get preferred seating for Fantasmic! or reserved space to view World of Color, etc.

If it were a summer trip when you'll need to take longer breaks, or a trip at any time when the crowds are heavier, I'd actually consider staying on-property to be more helpful. For our December trip it would have been pretty much a waste of money for us, because we were literally only in the rooms to shower, sleep, and one night, relax for like an hour before bed. The crowds were so light I don't think we would've taken any sort of break no matter how close or far our rooms were.

Obviously, other people consider staying on-site being part of the experience. For me, I'd only do that if money were no object. If money is an issue for you, you might have LESS walking if you stay off-site, believe it or not!

Does magical express service hojo?

Yes; I think they just service the Disney-owned hotels first.

You'll love the parks in December. :)

That is a pretty unbeatable price for the hojo. I also understand dlh might have construction happening at this time anyway? It might be better to avoid that.

What is the hotel closest to dl, just out of curiosity?

To the DL park it is kind of a tie between GCH and the good neighbor Best Western Park Place Inn. To DCA the GCH is closest - since it is connected to DCA!
