My 84 y/o mom stays with us in the winter and she arrives tomorrow. Her health isn't great anymore and her appetite is even worse. She doesn't eat a lot, but she always saves room for dessert!! We aren't dessert eaters so I'd like to buy a couple things to keep in my freezer so I can give her a little piece each night. She LOVES chocolate. That is her absolute favorite. She likes cheesecake, but only likes it plain. She also likes cannolis, but we don't have any Italian bakeries nearby. We also don't have Trader Joe's so their desserts are out.

Any suggestions on specific brands/types of desserts that are a sure fire hit?

Chudleigh's apple Blossoms - Sam's Club - are awesome!

They also carry them at Wal Mart - I think their brand. Exactly the same and very good.

I like Mrs. Smith's pumpkin pies. Some other pies I've tried from bakeries are way too sweet. :p

I also like Sara Lee's coffee cakes. You can slice the coffee cakes into individual slices and put them in the toaster oven for about 10 minutes. They are so yummy that way. They slightly crisp up, while the icing gets all gooey on top.

Sara Lee's pound cake is good too. Very buttery.

Sara Lee cheesecake bites are to die for. They come in an ice cream container about the size of a quart. You find them in the freezer section in different favors. Me and my sister both find them addicting. Our favorite are the strawberry or raspberry ones, but they do come in plain and chocolate also. You eat them frozen, and they would make a great after dinner snack, as you can just grab a few and then save the rest for the next meal. Although, I have been known to finish a whole container in one sitting before they are that good. I personally like them better than normal cheesecake.

Does she like ice cream? Haagen Dasz makes some amazing chocolate ice cream.

If you have a local school close by that sells Market Day, order those for future visits as their pies are awesome and you can keep them in the freezer until needed. If you are not sure just log onto marketday.com and check it out.

Thanks everyone! Keep the ideas coming. I'm making a list and heading to the store tomorrow. I'll buy one thing to try, but she is with me for four months so I plan on buying multiple things over that time.

These sound like something she would really like (the plain and chocolate) and I like the size.

She does like ice cream! I do keep a small container in my freezer when she visits and she enjoys that treat. I just notice that she seems to enjoy something with a little more substance when we go out to eat or someone visits with a special cake or pie.

Gordons

Sells a container of 50 frozen

GFS, Belgian mini chocolate topped eclairs that are very good.

Talenti Gelato or Sorbetto

They sell it in grocery stores. It comes in a clear plastic pint jar.
It is fabulous!

My family loves their cheesecake! We have a store that sells a 3-4 variety of slices cheesecake. Everyone can pick their favourite. ;)

I like to buy mini cheesecakes, cheesecake bites or just buy a whole cheese cake and cut it into tiny pieces. Then I make raspberry sauce/syrup in the microwave and ladle it out. This also works well with a Sara Lee pound cake or, well, any plain grocery store cake.

Just take a package of frozen rasberries (1 pint size) and let them thaw a little (if you use them frozen, it will work; just extend the cooking time a little), a half cup sugar, 1/2 cup water, and a teaspoon to a teaspoon and a half of lemon juice. If you want to thicken the sauce, I'm told you can add a little corn starch (I never do.) Throw it all into the microwave and cook for a minute. Stir. Cook for a minute. Stir. Make sure it's thick enough and is a nice sauce. Done. Wait a minute or three for the stuff to cool, then use or save back for later in the fridge.

It is soooo good and it makes anything you serve, from ice cream to cheese cake to pancakes twice as good, and it will "fancy" up simple desserts.

I would check out the bakery section of your supermarket. Ours has great selections of pastries like cannoli, eclairs, italian cookies etc.

If you have a Whole Foods Market, they have a lot of nice sweets, many in small serving sizes, like the cheesecake. (DD got one yest, in fact, and took it to school today.)

My mother is a little older and loves her sweets, too - especially anything lemon. I don't know about your mom, but mine couldn't afford "treats" growing up during the depression so to this day, it's special for her to get something sweet and watch her excitement about it! (Isn't it amazing how times change?)

Whole Foods has a great bakery. Love their stuff, especially since they don't use artificial colors. Sometime mine even cuts up the couple days old cakes and sells slices for $2-3 a slice. Sometimes the slices are huge (depends on who cuts them). And check the display for sales. They have the small cakes (2 servings) on sale for $2.50-4.00.

I remembered another frozen dessert. Pepperidge Farms makes puff pastry apple turnovers. I put them directly on the oven rack in my toaster oven, instead of on a baking tray. This way the bottom gets all puffed up to, instead of staying flat & moist from being on the tray.

As for the Sara Lee coffee cake that I mentioned before, get the butter pecan, unless she doesn't like nuts.

Weight Watchers Smart Ones have some nice desserts. They usually come 2 to a package.
