Best Steak?

Believe what you wish. No skin off my nose.

Sorry that facts seem to disturb you.

“When the facts are on your side, argue the facts. When the law is on your side, argue the law. And when you don’t have either the law or the facts on your side, pound the table!”

I have to say I, too, wondered about the USDA Prime designation vs. the
"black angus from our own farm" description. I even asked our waiter about it when we dined there last month because I was skeptical that a steak not designated USDA Prime would be top notch. I got the story about "it's not Prime, it's better than Prime."

So, I ordered the small filet mignon (one size up from the Mary Ann steak). I ordered it medium rare and waited to see what I thought.

Well, it was -- bar none -- the best steak I have ever had in my life. Really amazing -- tender, very flavorful (which a filet often is not) and just plain yummy. I told dh that my steak could turn any vegetarian into a carnivore!

I would rank it far and away better than anything I've eaten at Yachtsman (altho I was a big fan of the Chateaubriand there, which is no longer on the menu, thanks to the DDP).

Places like Le Cellier are simply not in the same league. And, frankly, my Shula's steak was much, much better than my most recent steak (a year or so ago) at Ruth's Chris.

My view -- when they say their black angus is better than USDA Prime, they are right!

I am glad you enjoyed your steak.

I've been at Shula's three times now, twice in WDW and I've never had a good ribeye there.

I am also great with you saying, in your mind the Shula steak is better than Prime because that is an opinion. It is when someone wants to insist that the Shula steaks that are officially USDA Choice, are USDA Prime when they are not.

Ruth's Chris is the bottom of my top steakhouses. Independent places (Peter Luger, CUT, Chamberlin's, Gibson's etc), then the top chains, Flemings, Morton's, Del Frisco, Capital Grille, The Palm, Smith & Wollensky, and Ruth's Chris bringing up the rear. They are still good, but not as good as the others I think.

See, it's all a matter of taste - not really caring what they call their beef, but they had the best Rib Eye and Prime Rib I ever had ON WDW property. I used to enjoy the Yachtsman's before the DDP.

The best steak I ever had was at the Metropolitan Grill in Seattle - after that it was Shula's.

You're good at name dropping, that's obvious but now you're quibbling on personal taste. I'd eat at Ruths' over Morton's every time. Does that unequivocally mean Ruth's is better, IMO? No way, I can admit that it's all personal opinion at this level. I've never been to a Flemings or Cap Grill that was better than The Palm or any Ruth's I've been to but still it's just my experience.

Shula's developed their system fully realizing they didn't meet the prime classification in one of eight criteria but knew they exceeded prime standards on seven others. Why does this simple and well documented course of action mean something nefarious was intended?

Definitely NOT Shula's. Shula's is serving choice beef at prime prices.

If you want to stay at WDW, go with the Yachtman, Le Cellier or Citrico's. If you really want a great steak get off property and go to Fleming's, Morton's, Del Frisco's, the Capital Grille or the Palm.

I agree. I can have a juicier, more flavorful steak at 3/4 the price at my local steakhouse. If anyone's ever in the Lehigh Valley visit Blue Grillhouse! Best fliet mignon I ever had!

Best steak I ever had came off my own backyard grill. And that's not because I'm an expert at grilling steaks (far from it), it's because I've never met a steak I didn't like.

I suppose it's like anything else - some people are really passionate about their meat, others (like me) really don't know the difference. You could put chopped sirloin on a plate and as long as it's cooked properly, I won't complain.

Having said that, I'll have the opportunity to try Yachtsman's twice in less than two weeks (perhaps the porterhouse one night, the filet the other night), as well as Narcoossee's, Artist Point, and several others. In fact, over the course of 10 evenings I plan on having steak on every one of them. :)

I'll keep in mind what I've read in these posts but then judge for myself as well.

Hey Pete, feel free to go to Shula's web site and then go to the web sites for all the places I've mentioned and I can give you a dozen more names to check out.

They will all tell you what kind of meat they serve, and all the top steakhouses serve USDA prime and only the USDA can rate meat. The meat that Shula's serves is USDA choice beef, those are the facts.

You can even say you like USDA select better for all I care, but the fact is that Shula's serves USDA choice, not USDA prime and they charge USDA prime-like prices.

That Shula's tries so hard to obfuscate the grading of their beef is very telling.

well, gee, if anyone is ever in Algonquin, illinois, I work at Wine and Roses Steakhouse.. only certified angus beef..delicious steaks....

but, since that probably is never going to happen.. I love to hear other's opinions of the steaks at the various disney restaurants.... helps us picke out where to eat.

now.. I forget..does captain's grille serve a good steak?

Been there done that.

I've read what you've read and completely understand that Shula's beef is technically considered choice by usda standard. What I'm saying is that Shula's doesn't dispute that fact but feels that the Shula standard is of BETTER overal quality based on their indepedent standards. This is what you believe to be slight of hand. I understand their take and find nothing sly or underhanded about it.
