My mother (and father) are taking DS and Dneph in 3 weeks for FD. I know she is intending to rent a scooter for the 6 day trip (knee replacement and fibromyalgia).

Where is the best place to rent from? (They're flying)

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Post #2 deals with mobility and we list several locations where people here have rented with a high level of satisfaction. The list is not all-inclusive, but a company will not be added until several people have mentioned using them with no major problems. So just because it is not on the list does not mean it is bad, it just means we have not gotten sufficient reports.

Or, if you want an easier route to the FAQs, click on the link in my signature.

Sweet thanks! I knew you guys would have the answers I needed! Mom and Dad think they can go commando (with 2-3 yr old boys in tow) with an ECV so I'm doing a lot of the "leg" work for them!

Thanks again!

Just wondering how they are planning for the 2 little boys as far as a stroller is involved?
If it's just the 2 adults and 2 kids, they will need a double stroller since your Mom won't be able to push a stroller. Some of the ECV rental places listed in the FAQs thread also rent double strollers - although they probably want to make sure they have one they know they can easily fold for the buses. It is also possible to rent double strollers at the parks, but no guarantee any will be available when they arrive (although there are very many). If renting from the park, they would also have no stroller to get to and from the park (which may be a problem with tired 3 yr olds).

I agree and I'm fighting them on this one. My (stubborn) father swears he'll make it without one. I keep pushing for them to take our double. He doesn't want to mess with it on the plane. I'm to the point of paying for it myself and if the use it, they use it. If not, oh well - they had it just in case.

My family has a long history of travelling with "broken" family members - usually myself (I have had multiple surgeries on feet, ankles, knees - around 13 by the time I was 18, starting at 6) and we've done okay, this is the first trip where it's been mom on the DL.

I love this board and I'm so thankful you are here to share an immense wealth of information! I've also loved reading about the visually impaired threads - I work with 2 kids who are blind (LCA) and hope that one day they'll make it to the World. At least I know where to send them for info.

Thanks for the nice words about our posters who share so much information.

If he's worried about bringing the stroller on the plane, maybe he would agree to rent one there.
Personally, I would be concerned that without a stroller, one the other (or both) of the kids might end up riding with gramma on the scooter. It looks fun and it look innocous, but is not safe. Most of us have seen kids accidentally hitting the driver's hand, which caused the ECV to veer off course. I've also seen some falls off - the kids I saw were not hurt bad, but not a good chance to take. The Park rental and off-site rental companies have a clause in the rental agreement that says only one person on the ECV and no one under 18.

I doubt they'd let them ride (dad's a retired firefighter). But I still agree that they need something. Maybe if I throw enough numbers under his nose he'll bite. =)

Thanks again for all of the info. I've been trying to help them out as much as I can.

The airline staff will take the stroller when they board and store it in the baggage area - they won't be able to actually board the plane with it. He really does want it - he just doesn't know it - ;) for the preflight waiting period and the post-flight baggage-claim time - it's alot of walking, waiting and standing around - trust me!

We went to DW when my son was almost 5 and my daughter was 8. We began day one with no stroller (how naive we were:laughing:) and by the end of the first day we learned our lesson and thereafter rented the double. It was too much walking for even my daughter...

In 2008 we were in DW and on our return flight home MCO Southwest Terminal was evacuated because of a man with a bomb. We stood in line for 3 hours to check our bags/check in, and another 45 minutes to go thru security. Thankfully I was in a wheelchair and my kids took turns on my lap during this time. You never know what can happen when travelling so with a 2 and 3 year old a way to simply contain them in an emergency is essential!:)
