Best room configuration for a party of 7?

Our travel party will be:
Grandma
Aunt & Uncle (they snore! loud! need to be behind a shut door at least)
Mom, Dad, 5 year old, and 1 year old

What's the best set of rooms to get? Grandma is arguing for 3 rooms with interconnecting doors. I'm not sure that's even a thing. Cost is a factor, so some sort of club level suite probably won't work. With the little kids, I'm not sure a balcony is a safe choice, but Aunt and Uncle would like one.

If you can swing it, I’d suggest one balcony for aunt & uncle. Then connecting interiors (or ocean view) for (1) mom & dad and (2) grandma + kids. (interiors across the hall from the balcony.)

If grandma books a solo cabin, she will be paying double fare. A kid in the cabin with her will be adult price.

Honestly, if grandma wants her own room I'd respect that. But talk to her about the single supplement and offer to put the 5 year old in there to help offset the upcharge.

Correct there aren't 3 rooms with interior connecting doors, but you can do 2 connecting. And if you reserve 3 verandahs most will connect outside on the verandah. Which ship?

If grandma and the aunt and uncle are related, not in-laws they could share a room and you would have your kids in a room with you. Only two cabins together will have a inside connecting door, there no three cabin configurations like that. You could have your balconies possibly opened up to connect so you can move between rooms that way, or have them next to each other but you would need to go into the hall to get to the next room. With little ones I wouldn’t want to have to go in the hall to get to a different room they are staying in. Whatever configuration you decide you guys are going to have fun!!

I would put the Aunt and Uncle snorers in an inside cabin across the hall from a family stateroom with veranda that sleeps 5. Mom and Dad in the Queen bed. Grandma on the lower bunk (fold out couch). 5 year old in top bunk. 1 year old in Murphy bed or a Pack and Play? The balcony door has a high lock that kids can't reach. And a plexiglass cover on the railings so really should be safe. There are a LOT of verandahs and a lot of kids on these ships.

If Aunt and Uncle are paying for their own cabin then they can upgrade to a connecting cabin to the family veranda? Never mind, different category rooms don't connect . . . maybe 3 ocean VIEW rooms on a lower deck? I would choose one cabin with a verandah over trying to connect.'

(I shared a cabin with a woman who snored and I got NO SLEEP, I wouldn't make Grandma sleep with the Aunt and Uncle. Unless she has hearing aids she can turn off . . )

The balconies are safe even with kids. There is a security lock high on the door that was difficult for me to reach (I’m 4’10”). Even without the security lock the door was too heavy for our 2 year old to open by himself, plus you have to twist the handle to unlock it. The balconies are plexiglass so they can’t climb on a railing.

We had a travel party of 8 and had 4 adjacent veranda rooms. Our room connected with grandma’s, and the balconies for all our rooms were opened so we could get to the other grandparents’ room, too. Grandma slept by herself, but I was on her reservation so she didn’t have to pay the single supplement, and so she could get my castaway club status.

You want a parent with the kids, because if there is an emergency situation, you don't want grandma to have to be responsible for even one of the kids. Mom can sleep with dad in their room, and grandma effectively has her own room (or even babysits one or two nights).

Cruise staterooms aren't that big, so Grandma should have her own stateroom to be able to get some peace and quiet and sleep in a real bed rather than a converted couch. The Aunt and Uncle's desire for a verandah should be honored. A standard rather than family verandah can cut down on the cost. Verandah staterooms are safe for kids. The doors are not lightweight and there is a lock that is high up and is always kept in the locked position by the stateroom host. Mom and Dad with kids should get a Family-sized stateroom, either oceanview or verandah.

Great suggestion. This way the cost is (for rooms 2 & 3) 4 adults and one child. If you give Grandma her own room, you're paying for 4 adults and 2 children, since you will still be paying for 2 in Grandma's room.
