Best Ride or Attraction

In terms of regular parks (not disney), Cedar Point in Ohio is without question the King of thrill rides and Coasters, and has lots of other great stuff (in addition to being on one of the Great Lakes).

Can't wait to do Cedar Point at some time in my life. I am a Roller Coaster fanatic, and I know this park would be the ultimate for me. I envy you for having been there!
Maybe one day I'll win on the lottery, and this humble man can take a trip to what looks to be Roller Coaster paradise!!!!

Carl.

overall - Splash Mountain

MK - Splash Mountain
MGM - Tower of Terror (and this one is number 2 overall after splash mountain)
Epcot - Test Track (i haven't been on Soarin yet so who knows)
AK - Festival of the Lion King (not exactly a ride, but my favorite thing at AK)

We would have to say,

MK - Space Mountain
AK - Kilamajairo Safari
Epcot - Mission: Space
MGM - Rock 'n' Roller Coaster

SeaWorld - Kraken
US - Jurassic Park
IoA - Spiderman/Hulk

Great to see how peoples views differ. One things for certain though, when we go back in November we should avoid Stitch like the plague and must deffo do Soarin'.

sorry i didn't respond earlier...i just noticed your response (and realized that i answered the other question twice..)...

anyway...Cedar Point.....well of course it's not WDW....it's from the thrill park genre of parks.....but in the category of thrill parks it's AMAZING....so many coasters of so many different kinds....
the classic HUGE wooden coaster (with a double track so there are two trains at the same time - appropriately named Gemini)....this is my absolute favorite roller coaster of all time....the classic classic coaster....perfect in every way....lots of air time.....just perfect..

and they have the take your heart right out of your body super tall steel coasters that seem to defy gravity on the way down....
i remember riding one of them the year that coaster opened....maybe it's called the millenium but i'm not sure...anyway....that first hill up nearly killed me....we just kept going up and up and up and up and up and up and up and up....
you get the idea......by the top, i'd already made about 5 bargains with God......geez.....scary scary scary.....by the way, did i mention i'm afraid of heights?....

and they have inverted coasters and looping coasters and every which way but up coasters.....

i believe it's recognized to have the most coasters of any park....certainly in the US, so i imagine that means the world as well...

in addition to all those coasters (the last time i looked which was a few years ago, i think the count was 16 coasters, but they've probably built more by now), there are lots of nice regular park rides....log flumes, and slides, and cars to drive, and things to spin you until you lose your lunch...and on and on and on....

and lots of stuff for kids....we used to go for 2 days (staying overnight in one of the many motels in the area...-probably the holiday inn) when the kids were little....there were so many kiddie rides for them to enjoy....many many....much more than in other similar parks...

oh and there's this really great rope climbing playground for big kids....lots of fun..
and there was a dolphin show (i assume there still is)....

and right next door (but you don't have to buy a ticket for it if you don't want to - but there's a combined ticket if you want) is a nice water park....and then of course there's Lake Erie and the beach...
and if you really want to splurge you can stay right there at the hotel which is a recognized historial site (i forgot what it's called....maybe The Breakers)...

we never did that since we're from Michigan where the rest of the great lakes are (so no need to waste cedar point time on the lake)....

anyway....it's a nice place.....we used to live about 3 hours away, which is why we always did 2 day visits.....

but again, it's not WDW....it's a thrill park....and if it's thrills you want, you won't be disappointed.....

go to the website at www.cedarpoint.com..
on the lefthand side, click on 'inside the park' and then "roller coasters'...i was right...there are 16 coasters.....but look at those pictures....wow....now THAT's a coaster....
oh...and by the way, the one in my story about making bargains with god is called Magnum......not millenium...i haven't been on that yet....but let me tell you, the magnum was no slouch on the scare scale...

but if you go, do NOT miss my beloved Gemini....the best....built in 1978 according to the website....and still the best in my opinion....

good luck in getting there one day..

Thanks so much for your detailed post, Beth. Loved reading it. Hope I will make it there one day. It would be the ultimate park for me. At least two days sounds like a good option to me! So many coasters to ride, one day wouldn't be enough! Thanks again for all the information. I will check out that website.

Hi Beth

I suspect it is Millenium Force you are talking about - a 310 ft drop - sounds bliss. I have kept track of this park for a good few years now and want to do it eventually. They also have Top Thrill Dragster which tops 420 ft - it has since been overtaken as the tallest in the world but as Cedar Point was the first park in the world to open coasters at 200, 300 and 400 ft, then I suspect 500 won't be too far off!!

If you don't mind me asking, can you remember where you stayed and how long you think you would need to really see and do it all there? Did you visit any other parks in and around that area??

Thanks Nick

Hi Nick. This has now been topped by another coaster? I hadn't heard about that. Which is the new record holder?

Cheers, Carl.

It's been topped by this little fella: http://www.rcdb.com/id2832.htm

It is the same ride system as TTD and by all accounts it is suffering from the same reliability problems which have hampered TTD. I wouldn't mind a go on either of them!!

You could possibly do it in one day, but since we were driving in from the Detroit area, a good 3 hour drive, we stayed overnight and turned it into a mini-vacation. They had a 2 day ticket (which i'm sure they have now as well).

and then there's their waterpark, which we never went to, so I don't know how that is.

But as I said, you could do the main park in one day. Cedar Point is just outside of Sandusky Ohio (look at google maps or one of those things to see where it is). I don't know how far it is from Cleveland. Probably an hour or maybe more. But Cleveland's a dump, so there would be no reason to go there.

Actually, go to the website www.cedarpoint.com
they probably have a map there....and they also have their own hotels....not just Hotel Breakers..

we stayed just across the causeway from Cedar Point, at one of those cheap motels from one of the major chains.....really cheap and even had an indoor swimming pool and mini golf.....
i'm guessing that it was either the Courtyard (ramada? marriot?) or something like that...

But there are a million of them all along this dumpy road that is just before the turn to the causeway to get you out to cedarpoint...

Ohio's not exactly my idea of a good time ....i mean really.....what's there?....cleveland?....cincinnati.....toledo????......nuclear reactors?....
oh and also the turnpike with the ohio state police (those guys who look like forest rangers in funny hats) who just LOVE to give tickets to all the michiganders driving through...

ohio....i spent a month there one weekend......tis a boring place...
except for cedarpoint...

now if you want to see a beautiful state, after visiting cedarpoint, get in a car, head west until you hit I-75 and turn right to go north into beautiful Michigan...of course at that point it's also pretty dumpy....but keep driving north on I-75 for about 6 hours until you get to the northern part of the lower peninsula of michigan (by sleeping bear dunes national park, and charlevoix, and traverse city) and you'll think you're in heaven.....
and then keep going north from there....to mackinac island and then on into the upper peninsula....peace and quiet.....and lots and lots of water...they don't call those lakes great for nothing....

but i digress...

yes you might be able to do it in a day, just like any amusement park....however if it's very crowded on a day you visit, the lines for the killer rides will be long......i remember standing in the line for the magnum XL200 for over an hour -- multiply that by the number of coasters you want to ride and that takes longer than a day.....
it's only open in the spring, summer, fall (check the website to find out exactly)...

Thanks for the info!! I had a major plan to do this at one point but it never came off - I was going to buy an annual pass and hit Dorney Park as well in the trip - plus Cinncinnati has Paramount King's Island and I was thinking about Michigan (as it has a big park there as well with a monster of a wooden coaster!!)

I suspect 3 or 4 days would be enough for me to do it and the cheap hotels sound perfect - I only ever need somewhere to rest my head!!

For sure! One day for a park with 16 coasters sounds nearly impossible to me (and that's not including all the other rides there). I was thinking two, maybe even three days for Cedar Point park alone!!

Carl.

certainly 2 days easy.....after all, one ride on Gemini is just not enough (that's the wooden coaster with the twin side by side trains)...
you have to ride the blue coaster once...and then the red coaster once...and then the blue coaster again.....and then the red......
you get the idea...

and then on to all the other coasters......

the truth is, we haven't been there in about 3 or 4 years.....we only get back home for one week each summer and that's usually after 3 weeks in WDW....so we don't have the time to drive to CP and back....so instead, when we're in detroit we head out to that steven spielberg place and its name just slipped my mind.. ...
he also has one in las vegas....oh...GameWorks....the one in suburban detroit is multi-story and lots of fun.....

and there i go again....as you can see, i'm a loyal midwesterner :)

My favourites are

Tower of Terror
Buzz Lightyear
Rock and Rollercoaster

But basically I love them all!!! :cool1:

My Favourites are:

MK- Splash Mountain

Epcot- Test Track

MGM- Tower of Terror

AK- Kali Rapids

Universal- MIB

IOA- Popeye's Bilge Rat Barges

Busch- Gwazi Lion

Seaworld- Kraken

I fully expect highlights from this September's visit to include Soarin', Mission Space, ROTM and Sheikra as all have opened since my last visit in 2002

On the subject of Cedar Point the original plan for this year was to do New York, Niagra and then Cedar Point for 4 days which was the recommendation from several people I know who have visited there. Add to this a few visits to some Six Flags parks and a couple of Paramount ones would have meant a rather intensive theme park marathon. With a sub 2 year old though we made a difficult decision to postpone the trip to CP for a few years with Orlando a very competent alternative choice.

I'd stay away from most of the six flags parks if i were you. They don't have a great reputation anymore. Stick with CP. And maybe Hershey Park in Pennsylvania. I haven't been there is years, but I hear it's still nice. Not on the level of CP, but better than Six Flags.

Niagra Falls is of course very nice and worth a visit. There are some interesting things to do there. Like going under the falls (in these cave like things). And the Maid of the Mist.
The Canadian side is prettier. Which means standing on the American side looking across to the Canadian side. So you want to be standing on the American side as you see it.

If you drive to Niagra Falls through Canada, you can cross the border there to get to the American side (that's what we do).

As an 11yr old I would say,

MK- Space mountain
Ak- Dinosaur
MGM- Tower of terror
Epcot-Test track
IOA-Dudley Doo-rights Ripsaw falls
Universal-Jaws
Busch Gardens-Rhino Rally
