best rates for dollars $$$

comparetravelmoney.com compares most of the best rates from different companies. Generally Crown Currency Echange is the highest, but I'm not sure how reliable they are. Travelex order and collect always have a pretty decent rate, although you can sometimes obtain better rates from Post Office or other companies.

I've just ordered mine today from Crown Currency for our trip in May
$2.0097 for £1 :thumbsup2

We've ordered from them before, no problems

Yes, I would recommend too, used them a few times, always deliver bang on the date requested.

Cheers Michael

travelex has 1.95. not sure i would let crown currency have my money for months at a time without getting anything for it till a few months after you ahve paid.

We use FairFX. Not hard cash but a mastercard pre loaded. It costs $2 to withdraw cash but we withdraw cash that we will need over a week, everything else goes on card. We got exchande rate of over $2 to £1:thumbsup2 Used it 3 times with no charges and have just loaded it up for oct NY trip:yay:

Is Crown Currency really OK? I usually go to the post office as I have a fear of handing money over to internet companies! Do you just pay them online? Do they then deliver the money at the allocated time?

Have used them twice but only for $1000 at a time & no longer than the 14-21 day rate. I don't think this company are governed by FSA rules or anything - they are not like a bank. Saying that, to date, I haven't had a problem :) - but like others have said not sure I would pay now for delivery in Decemer.

I havealways used marks and spencers.Always found them the best rates out of all TA banks and post office.:thumbsup2

Many use them no problem, but as said if they get into financial difficulties you lose it all. Personally I dont think the gains are enough to use them. To get the best rates you have to go long term, you then lose interest on you money. What you gain on the exchange can easily be lost in interest. I don't exchange anymore, just take whatever we can get on a fee free credit card, hopefully getting over $2/£1 next week when we are there. A lot easier than cash.

Agree
Take empty interestfree credit card

Nationwide cards seem to have the favoured support

We confess to using cashpoints/ATMs when required. Just large amounts, (use safe) as small bits often attract more charges

Yes - Nationwide credit card is our approach too.

We always use www.No1currency.com - we have found them to be the best rates on the high street (albeit they dont have a great coverage UK wide) - On Saturday we got 1.974 $ to the £, when the Post Office were offering 1.93 $
We find it much simpler to take in UK cash and exchange it over the counter - its worth a look at the link to see if they are in your local area.......
just checked M&S and they are giving 1.935 whereas No 1 Currency are 1.950 - not too much of a difference but soon add up

is anyone here an expert on what the pound vs dollar might do in the next few weeks??

I was trying to hold out until it hit 2.10 again before paying the balance of our disney booking (direct with disneyworld.com) - but then its slumped in the last couple of days and is starting to scare me half to death!! :scared1: I think I've probably lost around £200 already!

Is the slump likely to continue (in which case I'll probably cut my losses and pay ASAP) or do I hold out longer and wait for it for it to go back up?

Who knows whats going to happen but just think £200 is small change compared to my investments the past 3 months, so far down about £10,000 :sad1: Don't you just hate the financial system.

Gald to be some help - we always used the Post Office but 3 yrs ago No1 Currency were offering 10 cents more per pound so we started using them, and we have never found anyone who cam close on the high street. I dont like ordering currency on the net - prefer to do it all in person..........so it's perfect for us.........

Just ordered my currency the other day as the £ started to fall. I was pretty gutted when Travelex closed at Manchester Airport, to be replaced by what I thought was an 'own-brand' bureau de change. We've previously used Travelex online ordering and collected at the airport and always got a good rate, with that gone I thought that we'd be back to using the Post Office.

However, we recently found that what we thought was a one-off bureau is actually a larger company (currency-express.com), who seem to offer rates that can be as god or better than most others. Furthermore aswell as airport collection, they offer free home delivery. I managed to get $1.9547, which at the time could only be bettered by Crown Currency. It's definitely worth checking out if your airport no longer has a Travelex, as it may well have been replaced by one of these outlets.
