Best Quality Photo Printing Lab?

I've been disappointed lately by the quality of the prints from the lab I've used for a long time. I'm wondering what photo printing service you all think provides the best quality prints.

I use Nations Lab for my professional and personal prints.

Most folks who recommend mpix or pro labs do so because those labs frequently calibrate their equipment, provide consistent results, and they don't fiddle with your image unless you ask (and pay) them to do so. Professionals and serious enthusiasts take the time to calibrate and/or profile their computer monitors, then post-process their images in Photoshop or ther software to get them looking exactly the way they want them to look. All of that effort on the part of both the photographer and the lab are critical to getting a print that closely reproduces what the photographer sees on his/her computer screen. If any part of that color management isn't happening, then the results you get from the lab won't be predictable or consistent.

Most of your local labs in drug/grocery/discount stores use equipment that is mostly automated, technicians who aren't color specialists, and they don't calibrate frequently enough. But most heinous of all is that their systems automatically adjust the images you give them. You (and they) never know what the machine is going to do to the images as far as adjusting colors, contrast, exposure, saturation sharpening, etc..

So, to recap, using a lab like Mpix and having them not fiddle with the image will yield great results if the image you give them is already great (crap in, crap out). If you're not processing your images on a calibrated monitor, then the local 1-hour lab (this goes for the online consumer labs like shutterfly snapfish, winkflash, etc., too) may improve or worsen your image with their "auto adjustments". You wont' know until you get the prints. You could have mpix and the pro labs to have an actual person review the images and make adjustments to improve them. The results would be better than the auto-adjustments the consumer labs do, but you'll have to pay extra for this service.

bayphoto.com

many options, awsome staff, professional prints, professional papers
quick sending via mail, Well protected when sent, easy to use
to order and very friendly.
They even have a gold hands section or something like that where
if you are entering the photo to a professional contest they will handle with
special care and give you a white glove treatment.
Awesome variety of prints too. Right now I am in love with the metallic prints
and wrapped canvas's.

no contract needed either, just apply for a customer ID , that puts you in their system, Do NOT need to be a professional photographer nor do you need any licenses.

I dont work for them or anything I just love using them.

I use WHCC for my printing needs. I am not sure if the average consumer can use them though. I have also used PRODPI. They both have free shipping, which is a huge plus for me considering I am just trying to get a photo business started and would like to keeps all costs at a minimum. I have only had one issue with a print (it was bent) and they sent me a replacement for free.

Interesting article, but I want to point out that the tests were of the labs' color adjustments, not of the accuracy of their printing. The article says that when they placed their orders they turned the "color correction" option on and that they didn't test labs that didn't offer color adjustments. The article also states in the "bottom line" section that all the labs reviewed yielded similar results to one another with "color adjust" turned off.

I adjust my own photos on a calibrated/profiled machine; I don't want the lab undoing my careful adjustments with their own. I'm not saying that bayphoto isn't a great lab. I actually know other pros around the US who love them. I may try them some day. For now I've been happy with WHCC and ACI (need to be approved as a business, and invoices/billing is done monthly). I don't doubt the author's experience with WHCC's packaging, but, personally I haven't had any problems in that area. Their customer service has been excellent, so I'm sure they'd rush me a reprint if an order was damaged by UPS.

Great points. I also don't use their color adjusting, I do that myself :-) I may try them out though if they send free prints, but I have to say that WHCC has been very fast with all their shipments and all my work has come back looking great. I am not calibrated, but I have matched my screen to their test prints and haven't had any problems at all.
