Best prices for mattresses?

Our DD13 has so outgrown her twin bed and it's time to upgrade to a full size. Where are the good deals? Any brands we should definitely check out? Any we should avoid? Thanks for any recommendations!

I just bought a mattress for our son this weekend. One tip a friend gave is to visit a site that offers wholesale prices. One site would be www.us-mattress.com

You aren't going to be able to compare models to the ones in the store as they change the name for each store. But find the model that most closely resembles the one you are interested in. The price listed is where you should get to, plus or minus a bit at the store.

Don't be afraid to make a deal. Our mattress was a decent quality Sealy which was for our 2 year old for his first big boy bed. Obviously pillow top and frills weren't needed. The mattress we got was $750 list, on "sale" for $550 with a $50 mail in rebate. We mentioned we weren't interested in spending more than $400. Suddenly last years model was located and the 1 left was available for $399 and free delivery. I'm fairly certain the next person in the store would also be able to get the last one of "last years" model too.

The equivalent mattress on the website was $389, so I might have been able to get them to knock a few bucks more, but the whole process was over quickly and we had a hyper 2 year old who was more interested in obtaining a balloon from the store than a bed.

One thing is to be aware of bed height. Our convertible crib to full size bed + decent quality mattress and box spring equaled a very tall bed. If you have an existing frame, check the height and see if you should get a low profile box spring. Cheaper mattresses are much thinner, but decent quality ones are pretty thick these days. Non-flippable ones, and if you have extreme pillow top, they can result in a bed that would require a step stool to get into!
