Best portable foods

Hi! I am flying out to DL in a little while but am on a strict budget. I was at WDW last year, and I do not planning on buying that much food in a park again. Plus, I am on a weight loss journey and don't want my 5 day stay to ruin my diet (to be honest, I will splurge on some goodies!). I was wondering what are the best portable foods to bring with to DL and possibly which ones fly well. I know that there will be places to buy food there, but I am expecting them to be more than I can get at home.

I like to bring some packaged bars with higher protein counts and/or nuts. They fill me up and are light, small and easy to eat in whatever situation.

Make sure it's not in your carry-on. One trip we had to remove several items at TSA. Now we order from Von's and have it delivered to hotel.

Good luck

Some snacks we have packed and flown with:

Canned tuna/chicken with mayo packs from the grocery store deli (plus can opener)

Pita bread or Wasa bread for the tuna/chicken

Nut bars - favorites are Kind brand and Mrs. May's Trio bars (can get from Amazon or Costco)

Peanut butter and jelly and flour tortillas to make pb&j roll-ups

I've also packed a soft-sided cooler with freezer packs for string cheese and gogurts.

We also packed dry cereal and one of those milks that are non-refrigerated at the grocery store. Rice milk or soy milk maybe?

I like packing food. It makes room for all my my souvineers on the way home!

-Granola bars (I like Lara bars...just fruit & nuts)
-Nuts
-Individual containers of fruit (peaches, pears, or fresh apples)
-Cheese sticks & yogurt (if you have access to a small cooler or ice pack)
-Trail mix
-Pre-made containers of veggies (carrots, celery) and ranch

Hard cheeses or cheeses sold with a rind will keep quite nicely in a pack for the day (aged cheddar is a good example). Paired with sea salt or garlic crackers and you have quite a lovely treat.

I also suggest going to the local store and in the space where the raisins are, looked for a variety of dried fruit. My local Safeway (Vons in SoCal) has dried pineapple, mango, plums, papaya, cranberries, bananas, etc.

Also, my local stores carry small, plastic jars of Nutella (about 3 oz or so). If you can grab one, get that and some Teddy Grahams or other graham crackers for a delicious sweet.

I always bring:

Apples

Nuts

Whole grain bread

Almond butter

Bananas (I use this instead of jelly)

Grapes (freeze at hotel, makes a sweet treat)

Baby carrots

Snap peas

The weight loss program I'm on has meal replacement shake mixes, meal replacement bars, snack bars and powdered energy drink mixes, so I always bring those.

Enjoy yourself a bit too! Remember you can walk off a treat or two. Also there are some good inexpensive healthy choices around the park too, if you get in a jam.

If you do end up having a small soft-sided cooler, our family loves the packs of apples with individual little trays of caramel. They're about a dollar a piece at WalMart on Euclid. They're good when I feel like something sweet and I'm dangerously close to spending ten dollars on a huge candied apple.

We also bring zip-lock baggies with us so that when we arrive we can portion things out for the time we'll be in the park instead of carrying big bags and containers around with us. We usually bring nuts, Ritz crackers, granola bars, trail mix, Goldfish crackers, some kind of cookie, maybe a cereal.

I've been buying the Luna Protein bars. Under 200 calories with 12 grams of protein! Seriously- 1 bar works as a meal!

I also make & freeze meals for our trip. Saves on cost & I control the ingredients which is important on our organic, no processed diet. Even something as simple as baking & freezing blueberry muffins for breakfast would be easy to pack in your suitcase for your flight.

I also like popcorn, laughing cow wedges & crackers, apple slices, grapes & carrots. All easy to pack in to the parks & the fresh fruit really helps combat the Disney food "heaviness". ;)

we usually stay at a hotel that has a breakfast and have each of our kids grab some fruit such as apples or oranges to take into the park with us. Makes it nice for a mid morning snack to tide the kids over for a late lunch.
