I need to get a new digital camera for some vacations this summer and some special occasions, I don't want to lug my DSLR to Disney again and i'm getting too reliant on the OK camera on the iphone. Can someone recommend some good, cheap, point and shoot cameras? :)

Depending how "cheap"... The iPhone is just as good or better as many "cheap" p&s cameras. Generally, the advantage of a cheap p&s is better optical zoom. But the iPhone 4S/5 have other advantages.

Good and cheap typically don't go together when it comes to cameras.

I'm inclined to agree with havoc. Depending on which iPhone you have, you may already have a "better" camera than most cheap point and shoots.

What if you take the word cheap out? My iphone is an older one and no plans to upgrade it now. So, without the word cheap, any recommendations? I have read the reviews and am leaning toward the Sony RX-100 although I have absolutely no brand preference just want something to take pictures in low light at WDW and pictures of grandchildren who don't slow down much!

TIA

The RX-100 is a great advanced point and shoot. There are a couple of other cameras at that level that are also good, it just depends on the features you want. dpreview.com has some good buying guides that break down all the features along with some very good pros and cons of each.

I use the rx100. In terms of true compact size for under $1,000, it's -probably- the best camera currently on the market. Though it depends what you need. There are better cameras if a big telephoto range is a priority. There are other excellent cameras if you're ok moving up in size a little bit.

But the rx100 gives you a camera that fits in your pocket, with dSLR-like image quality. Has the manual controls and advanced options that make advanced users happy. Excellent in low light. (One of the few compact cameras that can truly take Disney dark ride pics). Good portraits, great landscapes, good candids.

I have an Iphone 4S and find the camera way too limited compared to even a P&S. Especially when it comes to indoor or low light pics, those type of pics just are not keepers. Overall I have not taken that many pics with my iPhone.

The camera I use for my side-kick camera is the Canon S100 which I guess has now been replaced by the S110. It shoots in raw and lets you adjust the aperture. The S110 runs for about $399.

The Canon s100/110 is a fairly advanced point and shoot. Many considered it the best enthusiast compact series, before the rx100. It is far better than an iPhone.

When talking about an iPhone being as good as a p&s, I'm generally referring to the cheap models.. Those under $100, even under $150. Once you are spending over $200, most of those cameras will generally out-perform an iPhone.

BandH Photo had the Panasonic lx7 on sale for $299 through tonight. My son just picked this up and enjoys it.

Hey pooh2, funny you mentioned the Lx7! On dealmac.com this morning I saw it for $260 (from new egg?), but by the time I was able to look into it, it was already gone. :(

Thanks, havoc315! Telephoto range is not a priority with a point and shoot - we also have a dSLR. I'm looking for a P&S to carry around that I can use without having to carry the heavier camera and 2 lenses.

Looking to spend around $100-$150. I don't like to use my iPhone because I have the 4. Which doesn't have a great camera, and it uses up your battery, so unless I get a mophie case, I need to get a throw around camera
