Where would I get the most money? I'm looking to get a new ring and comoletely change the style, so I won't be using the diamond or anything from my original wedding ring. I don't think a jeweler, like a car dealership, would give me the most, but I'm a bit nervous to sell it independently. eBay I would have to ship, and Craigslist would be a lot of cash for someone to handle. It's a pretty expensive ring so I want to do this right and not let it go for nothing, you know? I should mention I already found the new ring I want ( Fred Meyer Jewelers) and they won't buy it for store credit:(

There is such a HUGE mark up on jewelry that most shops would only offer you a small amount for a trade in. Why not use your diamond /diamonds in a new setting? Most jewelry stores will work with you in getting a new setting and placing your diamonds in the setting.

I do hope that you get a GIA cert from Fred Meyers. Now as to the question-- E-bay would be my choice but unless you have a high rating and have sold a lot of items -- well you can see my point. Craigs list would not be a choice for personal reasons.

Have you thought of an ad in your News paper? Maybe use a web page so they can see the ring with out calling you.

You are going to get much less for it than what you paid.

You can try Craigslist, but be prepared for it to be a pain. You will want to meet the person at a public place like a jewelry store so they can have it appraised. No one in their right mind is going to pay you close to the appraisal value though. And there is the risk involved in dealing with strangers and Craigslist weirdos.

You could also take it to a bunch of jewelers and see who offers the most.

I would check EBay for recent and current sales of similar items. That should give you an idea of where you stand. Plus, you can set a minimum reserve to protect your desired rate.
Of course, you'll pay some out in EBay's fees.
Best of luck.

Check with a locally owned jeweler.

had a friend who was a jeweler. He always said you will always buy at retail price and sell it at wholesale price. you'll take a beating.

Yes,I realize that. But considering we paid $5,000 for it, and it almost 3 carats total...I would hope to get a couple thousand. It's still a lot of gold and diamonds.

I sell alot on Ebay & often will take consignments for friends.

I've had a couple of friends ask me to sell engagement rings for them. Despite me warning them repeatedly that they will only get pennies on the dollar for them IF it sold, they went ahead & had me list them anyway.

None of them sold and the few offers I got for them were insulting (to the owners).

That being said, as a buyer I've gotten STEALS on jewelry on eBay. In fact, I got my 3 carat Eternity band that appraised at well over $5k for... sit down.. $750.

If it were me, I'd take the diamonds & make a necklace or something out of it. Gold still goes for a nifty price as well!

Good luck!

I was warned not to sell diamonds online bc a buyer can remove the diamonds out of the setting place cubics in and send it back stating no real diamonds were in the ring they bought. I was told you can only prove this in a court of law if the diamonds have their own number etching. Good luck!

I would have the diamonds taken out and save those to have something made with them in the future. Then sell the gold. That's really the only way you're going to make anything from this ring.

I would find a local dealer first. If you don't want any of your diamonds then at least let them melt down and re-use the gold from your original ring. Keep some of the sentiment that way. Or keep it, for one of your children. Even if not for intending it to be a wedding a ring. A friend of mine received her mother's original wedding ring. She turned it into a right hand ring she wears everyday now.

I can't imagine selling my wedding ring! The sentimental value is priceless IMO. It seems odd to me that you'd shop for a different one. It really isn't a wedding ring then.

Not everyone feels that way, though. I don't. I designed my engagement ring and still like it but couldn't wear it for almost the whole time we've been married. I had a series of cheap rings that fit during those years. I bought my wedding band and can't stand it. It'll be replaced as soon as I find room in the budget for a platinum band with stones all along it (what they call an anniversary ring).

Not everyone is as sentimental about metal and stones.

Things you don't expect happen -- 5 years into my marriage, I found out I'm allergic to the alloy metals in gold. I have new platinum rings now.

OP, may I second or third the idea of a small local jeweler? I found them to be much more helpful than the chain places.

But the ring she wants is at Fred Meyer jewelry store, which is definitely a chain.

FWIW I had my ring made by a true jeweler and gemcutter, and he was upfront and honest with me that he (and he said ALL but maybe he should have said "most" other jewelers) don't use the gold from the rings brought in. Gold from already-made jewelry can have impurities and won't make a good ring; it's sold and "new" gold is used. The sold gold goes someplace where they take out the impurities and sell it.

So you would want to really REALLY trust the jeweler, and ask about the process of taking out any impurities, who says they'll use YOUR gold to make your new jewelery.

Thanks again everyone. I did some more shopping today at lac and chain Jewelers, and am now leaning towards having my center stone put in a new setting. It's large and many Jewelers said it would be a shame not to use it and I wouldn't get much if I sold it. But my goodness I can't get over the price of fine jewelry! The design. Want is pretty simple and popular these days...halo around my oval cut diamond and thin diamond band...so lots of small diamond ...no side stones or anything...and it's about $3,000 at four different stores!! And even though they all say they will buy my old setting with the channel set diamonds...the price still comes to $3,000?!?! Ugh...maybe I'll just stick with what I have:(

I feel the exact same way. My original wedding ring and engagement ring, 1/4 carat, which is all we could afford 30 years ago, are soldered together and I have no plans to replace them because they are irreplaceable. Over the years, I have been blessed with other diamonds, bracelet, earrings and necklace.

Out of curiosity, what would you have done if you found yourself in my shoes -- married five years, skin under your rings broken and bleeding from an allergic reaction, and the dermatologist telling you no more gold or silver?

We took the diamonds from my engagement ring to a jeweler who created an identical ring out of platinum and I got a platinum wedding band (different than my gold one, but it looks better with my engagement ring), so the set is basically the same but with a different metal, but they're still not the original rings. I have friends who were heartbroken for me, but luckily I was ok with it. Tomorrow is my 14th anniversary, so I've had the "new" rings longer than the "old" ones! :)
