The timer on our dryer went, and the dryer was manufactured in 1993, so I'm thinking it is probably smartest to not even try to have it fixed, just buy a new one. I checked with Sears, Lowes, and Best Buy, and all three have a Whirlpool 5.9 cubic ft gas dryer for about 300. I can't seem to get any info about delivery & installation for any of the places, though. Is one place better than the other, or am I forgetting a place? Is Whirlpool the best brand for my $?
Thanks!

I always go with Lowes for our appliances now, only because they guarantee next day delivery. They will also take away your old appliance as well (might be a small fee for that though).

Usually places like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. only deliver to an area once a week. When a washer or dryer goes, you need the new one NOW!

You may try a local small appliance store too. We have one here, that has a very large scratch and dent section and I get top of the line appliances (they sell Viking etc), with minor dings for about half price. When I remodeled my kitchen in 2001 I purchased all GE Profile appliances from their scratch and dent section for a fraction of what I would have paid at Lowe's or Best Buy. I got the full manufacturer warranty plus the extended 5 year warranty plus all applicable rebates. No problems out of any of it.

You may want to try Best Buy - I always find their prices to be the very best and their extended warranties reasonable.
We bought our washer/dryer pair from them about 4 years ago for a great price - unfortunately, cannot remember what it was. Good luck!!

The cheapest I have seen new dryers is about $299. If you do not want to spend that kind of money you my want to check some local stores (not chains) and see if they sell reconditioned ones. Some stores will get gently used dryers, fix them and resell them for a bit cheaper. If it is worked on by a qualified service person they will come with the warranty.

My wife & I bought one when we got married 11 years ago for $100 and we still have it. Sears and other chains used to do this but I think they stopped. They didn't put them out on the sales floor. You had to ask to see them.
