Best option for MK

I have never stayed anyplace except on site when doing the MK. We are staying at the Royal Plaza and doing a water park, which we will drive to, and 1 day at the MK before heading over to Universal. My DH and grandson are doing Disney Quest while the girls and I go to the MK. I have heard that the bus from the hotel is not the greatest, so am looking for a way to make it easier. DH will drive to DQ, but is there some place he could drop us off in the am, without paying that would be better then the hotel bus? I know about the transportation center, but think you pay at the gate to get there. I am very familiar with WDW just never tried to do this before. Also does the bus run from the MK to Downtown Disney, think I remember it does, which would work in the pm. Thanks

No more buses from Downtown Disney to the theme parks.

You could try going to the Contemporary or Polynesian Resort which means going through the same toll gate as for the Magic Kingdom. Use the third or second booth from the right and ask directions for the Contemporary. If you don't get out any money the worst thing they can do is send you on a U turn but more likely they will just wave you on to the big bear right that goes to those resorts.

At the Contemporary or Polynesian you would take the same monorail you would take from the Transportation Center and parking lot.
