Will be going OOP on our trip and I'm looking for your best tips/tricks on finding deals while dining out of pocket - whether it is specific meals/snacks or restaurants. What strategies have you employed/heard about? Haven't seen a particular thread like this, so let me know if there is one. :D

Wow, I can't believe there have been so many views of this question and no answers yet! I'll take a shot at it though...

We are planning our next trip back to WDW after a 5+ year break (not my choice, I assure you!). We will be staying offsite and paying OOP for all of our meals, and we are trying to keep costs down as well. Our plans are to take picnic lunches into the parks on some days, and do some meal sharing. We share meals at home too sometimes when we go out, especially when we know the portion sizes are large anyway and we also have bread, appetizers, etc. I'd rather be comfortably full than totally stuffed and uncomfortable. You might try ordering an appetizer and an entree for 2 people, which would save a little$$, or only ordering appetizers and skipping the entrees altogether. For our upcoming trip, we are planning on Yak & Yeti, 50's PT, and LTT, where we'll probably share meals, and then splurging on a couple of buffets. Also, instead of doing a sit down meal in Epcot (WS), we'll be "eating around the world" by grabbing snacks in the different countries. Not sure if that will actually cost less in the long run, but it will be fun! :)

For OOP, Trails End Buffet at Fort Wilderness is a cheap buffet. It is small but does the trick. We also like to eat at The Plaza in the MK. Sandwiches are large and you can split a dessert. :goodvibes

We like to join Tables in Wonderland (either through Florida residency or by being an Annual Passholder). It gives 20% off everything, including wine, beer and cocktails, which really only ends up paying the tip, but having Disney pay the tip is great.

Share everything -- appetizers, entrees and desserts. Disney portions are usually adequate for sharing. Disney restaurants will split items in the kitchen if you'd like.

If you have children ages 10-12 or so, avoid buffets and family-style restaurants (unless you absolutely must do a character meal). Disney charges a full adult price of around $25 for a 10-year-old. When our boys were 10-12 or so, they ate next to nothing, so we would do one character meal and then focus on table service restaurants thereafter, where we could order them a children's meal with no hassle.

I find counter service meals generally to be very expensive for quality that runs the gamut from pretty good to inedible. So, we do not do much counter service, except for the couple of places we particularly like, including Peco Bill's at MK and Wolfgang Puck express at DownTown Disney. If you are going to do counter service, be sure to share. Also, it's good to pick places that have a "fixin's bar" where you can get a few extras like pickles and mushrooms at a serve yourself area. Some people swear by ordering a double hamburger and paying for an extra bun. Too much trouble for us, but I guess that's an option, too.

Sometimes, we eat a large lunch and a smaller dinner as prices are usually lower at lunch. This option has largely evaporated with the advent of DDP, however, since those who cannot get a dinner reservation want a steak option at lunch so they aren't "wasting" their Table Service credits. As a result, the dinner and lunch menus at most Disney-owed places look pretty much the same with little price difference.

Mostly, we share, share and share some more. It gives us the opportunity to try lots of places without getting overly full and, we hope, without gaining too much weight.

We have always shared, even on the DDP. Sometimes there isn't enough food to but lots of times there is. Like at Cosmic Ray's. They have a chicken and ribs combo. It is very good, comes with mashed potatoes and seasonal veggie, everytime we go it is very good green beans. It is more then enough for 2 of us.
We are so used to sharing that the first time we were on the DDP our youngest was 4 and when we were sitting to watch WISHES on our first night I went and got 7 Mickey bars. I came back and she just about fell over. I explained we didn't need to share this time cause we were on the Dining Plan. She said "I don't know what that is, but I like it!!!" That was the first time we all did that, before it was always half each.

We just returned from a weeklong July trip and we did DDP for 5 nights, OOP for 2. It seems simple, but we saved $$$ by ordering large cups of ice water at our CS meals! The heat in the parks was unbelievable, and the water tasted better to me than soda!

We also shared quite a bit. We found we weren't that hungry because of the heat. The portion sizes on the CS meals are pretty big!

Best OOP Values are most items in world showcase, Earl of Sandwich, The Plaza, Trail's End, Any TS breakfast that is not a buffett, Casey's Hot Dogs, most food courts.

For CS, the best two deals in Disney are Cosmic Ray's and Cookes of Dublin (DTD)...big portions and will not set you back much cash...

For TS, Nine Dragons for Lunch, WCC, Sci Fi, and Tony's Town Square are probably your best bets.

For a buffet: Trail's End hands down, and Boma for Breakfast (pricey but very good!)
For Sit Down: The Plaza , Beaches and Cream and Tony's for lunch (we tend to split food and if it wasnt for DDP we definetley wouldn't get dessert all the time lol)
For CS: Earl of Sandwich is such a huge deal for sure.

Best Sit down restaurants for OOP for our trips were-

The Plaza- Great food with a sit down experience just a few $ more than QS!
Crystal Palace Breakfast- make the latest reservation possible, good to go till night!
Beaches and Cream- Themed well and prices were good
Sci Fi Diner- Fun experience, food prices not great but better than most.

Great QS restuarants-

Earl of Sandwich
Roaring Forks
Contemporary QS
Colombia Harbor House
Casey's

I would have to say the very best value I have found is the quick service bakery/sandwich shop in France (EPCOT WS). Most of the items were just $3-4. It was also a good value for finishing the DDP because most of the items were counted as snacks so my friends and I had a really neat meal and got to try several things using up snack credits and paying just a few dollars out of pocket.

My favorite deals inside the world are:

Staring Rolls Bakery in DHS. Huge Sandwiches and great baked goods. The caramel and candy apples are great to share and they will cut them up for you.

I agree about Cosmic Rays and Flame Tree BBQ. Big meals and good food to boot.

TS I like Boma and OHana. Both are pricey all you can eat but worth it IMHO.

If you have a car you might want to venture to "the Dark Side" past the WDW borders. Try the Golden Corral (near the Premium Outlet ONLY) or A&W Rootbeer in the mall food court.

If you have a night out without kids both Roy's Restaurant and Ruth's Chris steak house have great pre fixe meals available. Not cheap mind you, but significantly less than a Signature at WDW.

Finally for my favorite hidden gem, Go to Universal's Royal Pacific Resort pool bar Bula's. It is a cool atmosphere, has awesome mixed drinks, and really great food with huge portions to share. Four adults went away stuffed for just under $25. Also the bartender will validate your parking so it is free. This place is so worth the drive and the resort is just beautiful.

If you do CS for lunch think about getting the childs plate it is still plenty of food and no one says anything to you when you order them

You might want to consider getting a certificate on restaurants.com for places within the world. Although I haven't used them at WDW, I've purchased them for other trips and found they worked well.

As an alternative viewpoint: in some ways the Signature restaurants are the best OOP, at least as compared to the DDP. On the DDP the Signatures cost 2 TS credits. When I compare just the price of entree+dessert, the Signatures are about 1.5 times more expensive than the regular TS. Thus, it makes more financial sense to use 2 TS credits for 2 TS meals rather than 1 Signature meal.

But for real budgeting, I agree to look over the CS menus before you go. Places like Sunshine Seasons and some of the resort food courts have very full meal combo platters (1/2 chicken plus 2 sides types) for about $10; these can easily be split. Drink ice water with meals and all day at the parks; cups of ice water are free for the asking at any restaurant or food stand with a soda fountain. In Epcot WS, I think the bakery in France is the best food value with Norway a close second. Starring Rolls gives you a similar deal in HS. In MK, go for Pecos Bill or Cosmic Ray for the fixings bar; practically a full meal by itself.

If you would like to eat at Rainforest Cafe', here is a website with coupons for apppitizers and kids meals.

You can also get an Orlando Magic Card. It is free to anyone, it takes about a week to get in the mail or you can stop at an Orlando visitors spot and get one there while on your trip. It offers discounts to character meals at the Dolphin resort, Medevil Times, and many other off site restaraunts. It also offers discounts at offsite hotels and the Swan and Dolphin Resort.

Enjoy!

We have done Ohana's for dinner and paid OOP on the last 3 trips. I always chose it since we would like to do a signature experience on each. Seems like a good meal to pay for OOP as compared to Kona or another nicer restaurant.
