My DS starts kindergarten this fall and his school is tree nut free. He loves PB and J and his sister's school is not nut free, so she takes them to school every day. I want an allergy free alternative for DS that tastes good and wanted recommendations. He has special needs and I want to sure everyone is safe first, but still want something he would like to eat. I will not be cross contaminating I promise. Soynut butter anyone??

Thanks soooo much! I knew someone on the Dis would have a recommend. DS will be excited!

Peanuts are not a tree nut.

If it is tree nut free you can send peanut butter.

I have tried many different non-pb butters. I thought soynut butter was okay, but my peanut eating DH hated all the brands.

Almond butter is okay but the texture really varies brand to brand. I would actually recommend "Sunbutter" (sunflower seed butter). I liked it, texture is good, and DH said it really does taste like peanuts.

But again, probably good to check on which nuts are forbidden.

I would second the Sunbutter brand. Both their regular creamy and crunchy have been received well by family and friends staying with DW, PB allergic DD11 and I.

A third for Sunbutter (I'm eating some on toast for breakfast right now!). My family likes it best by far of all the PB subs we've tried over the years.

You might want to try peabutter. I think it tastes better than the other "butters." Unfortunately, my DD, who was originally allergic to just peanuts and tree nuts, is now allergic to peas as well, so I no longer buy it.

DD9 is a huge peanut butter lover and our school is also nut free. We tried soy butter and she hated it. She will eat Sunbutter, as mentioned by PP's. I don't like it, as I find it has a bit of an aftertaste, but of all the variations we have tried, this one seems to be the most like peanut butter. Not too many places around here carry it, but Target does.

I think soybutter is horrible - IMHO.

We like Sunbutter. You can find a cheaper version of the Sunbutter brand at Trader's Joes and it is peanut/tree nut free.

We like the Sunflower Seed butter. My son likes to sit with his BF who has to sit at the allergy-free table so he won't feel alone at school so my son asks for Sunflower seed butter in his lunch.

Something else we've tried (well, the people in my family who are gluten free, that is) is Trader Joe's Cookie Butter. I've not tried it (cause I'm GF) but my husband and son say it tastes like gingerbread. (yum!) It looks and spreads like PB.

Granted, it's not a healthy nut, but it is a tasty alternative...

Soy butter was gross but sunbutter isn't bad - though - having myself never eaten peanut butter beyond the age of 1, I have zero clue what peanut butter tastes like. I do know that the smell wasn't repulsive, which I find peanut butter, so that was a plus.

My kids said it was positively nasty as PBJ.

Also, peanuts are not tree nuts. Peanuts are legumes. So if the school has issued a "tree nut free" call then you could very well be safe to bring peanuts. I'd call and ask. If nothing else, you might alert them to the fact that they've made an error. Many people have no idea that they're different. I"m asked all the time if I can eat walnuts and I can. Just not peanuts.

I also don't seem to have a problem with any other legume (beans/soy), except peas repulse me in exactly the same way that peanuts do, so I have no desire to test if I'm still allergic. As a baby I constantly vomited every time I ate peas and my mother thought I was just stubborn, so she kept giving them to me..

Sunbutter and for a special treat - Biscoff (cookie butter).

Sunbutter and for a special treat - Biscoff (cookie butter).

I had to google Biscoff. I want! That sounds so good! And the website says it's vegan, so I think my DS's could have it too. I'll have to see where I can find it here in Canada...

DH, DD, and I all love Sunbutter and I considered PB my favorite food before DS was diagnosed with his PA. DS doesn't like it, but maybe that's because it tastes similar to PB. Another one my kids LOVE is Simple Foods brand Chocolate Soynut Butter. It is really good and surprisingly the sugar content isn't much different than the other ones. The IM Healthy brand one doesn't taste nearly as good. I order it from Peanut Free Planet or from Simple Foods directly. We don't like any of the other soynut butters.
