Best name your own price deals

I am looking to rent a car for a few days while I take my son off to college. I am considering trying one of the name your own price websites. I had great luck last year in Hawaii with that approach.

What are some of the deals that you have received by placing your own bid? Are you more likely to get a better deal by waiting until the day before or farther in advance? Any help would be appreciated!

I just did Priceline last week for our up coming trip in 2 days. I needed a full size car and the best rate that I could get was $177 through National using the Carlson code that I wasn't sure I would get away with. Anyway, I got a full size from Alamo through Priceline for $160. Not the cheapest that I have ever had, but I am not completely offended by paying this price.
