Best mattress brand?

DS14's feet are hanging off the end of his twin bed, so we're going to get him an extra long twin. We want something that will be comfortable and durable, but of course we don't want to spend much. :teeth:

So talk to me about mattresses. If we stick with a name brand (Sealy, Serta...) are we pretty safe? Any other good brands?

The "big names" in mattresses make everything from great to cheesy mattresses, so you can't just go by the brand name. They also call their mattresses by different model names and numbers depending on the retailer selling the mattress, so it's hard to do price comparisons.

If I was buying a new bed (and didn't have to get it up a spiral staircase to my bedroom  ), I think I would go with the HEavenly Beds that are used at the Dolphin. They are wonderfully comfortable and reasonably priced.

Keep this one bumped. We are looking for a new mattress too and have NOOOOOO money!

Instead of an extra long twin, you might want to consider a full sized bed. The extra width will help, and it will be easier and less expensive to find sheets for.

We have a Sealy Reflexions pillowtop set, and it's simply the most comfortable thing we've ever slept on.

Anne, he has a small bedroom, and not much floor space. And I've seen extra-long twin sheet sets everywhere; that's the kind of beds many college dorm rooms have.

Edit: This is Barb.

Once upon a time, I interned for a Furniture Buyer at a major department store. He said that the best mattress brand was Stearns & Foster's.

I just bought myself a Stearns & Foster plush top queen sized mattress. I gave my old full size to my DS14 (whose feet also hung off his twin). It fits in his really small room, together with a dresser and entertainment center. He loves it.

My new mattress is great except that I didn't realize it was one of the really high ones, so the sheets I bought don't fit.
