Keep in mind I've been there at least 8 times myself, but this year we need to reduce spending more than ever while there! We have our *gulp* adult daughter (hard to believe she's 18) and her long-time boyfriend coming along in addtion to our two younger kids, so it's basically 4 adults & 2 kids! And boy can they eat!! LOL.

Anyway, it got me thinking - we have OUR favorite "secret" that we will not miss while there and I bet lots of others have them too. It's a very popular place to visit here in the Northeast, so I'm thinking this will be a "hopping" thread. ;)

Our secret (no so well-kept) is we always, always find at least one day to go to 125th Street to Northside Park. It's SO nice. Lots of ducks roaming around to feed. Foot bridges, and an awesome playground. The kids bring scooters or bikes or we just walk around. The most fun thing to do there though, is bring a couple of crab pots with some bait (both bought at the local walmart) and go to the pier at the park and get some crabs - we always release them, but lots of people take them to eat. It's beautiful ther and there are lots of photo ops, too.

One year my husband and a family friend each went fishing and actually got a small shark - that's right SHARK!!!! We even framed the picture of it because it was so cool and exciting to the kids!

I've spent time in OC every year of my life and I'm cheap, so I've got lots of ideas. :)
I second Northside park and fishing is lots of fun. There are quite a few "free" fishing spots around town. I've got a list of them on another computer if you're interested.

If you google "Ocean City MD free family fun", you'll find their tourism website with free movies on the beach, concerts, family olympics on the beach, etc. Some of the concerts are at Northside Park and you can purchase ice cream sundaes to eat while you listen. As I recall they are not too expensive.

The Carousel Hotel has an ice skating rink in the lobby, and once a week a professional group from Baltimore (I think) does an ice show that is great and free to watch (get there a little early). I think it's Wednesday evenings, but definitely check. They are really good and very popular.

We love the boardwalk, which can be crazy expensive, but if you go to snack a little, window shop, listen to the musicians, and people watch it's great fun. Farther up the beach (North of 1st Street), they have big play equipment on the beach which my kids loved when they were little.

And of course the best free thing is the beach! I could spend all day there. We walk, swim, sunbathe, collect shells, and in the evening fly kites. Northside Park is also a good place to fly kites. You can pick up a couple cheap at Rose's. Fishing gear too.

If you don't mind a little drive, go to Assateague State Park. I think it's $15/carload to get in, there is a beautiful and much less crowded beach, and if you are lucky you'll see the wild ponies wandering around. I think they have special nature programs for the kids.

On the way back from Assateague, we stop at Frontiertown Campground on Rt 611/Stephen Decatur Highway. It's not just for folks camping there. You can get unlimited water park and mini-golf access for a day for $14 for adults, less for kids, which is much less than you'll pay in OC. Look for coupons too. The water park is not huge but has 4 big slides, a big themed kiddie pool, and a lazy river. It's enough to keep my kids (middle schoolers) happy for 2 or 3 hours. The little restaurant next to the golf and water park is decent and has specials and alcohol! We never do the Western Theme Park because it seems kind of hokey but little kids might like it.

As for food we stay in a condo and take turns cooking so we don't eat out much mostly because we prefer it that way. But we always get a giant 28" pizza from Captain's Pizza. They have to turn it sideways to get it through the door and the kids get a real kick out of it. Pricewise not too bad as it feeds a ton of people.
I hesitate to tell you about this next one, as I love this place and would be devastated if it changes: Rippons Seafood at 11911 Coastal Hwy (tucked behind a 7-11). It's a carryout seafood place, and it's high quality stuff, not the junk they're feeding the tourists. I can get crabmeat like I remember it there (the stuff that only goes to the expensive restaurants now). I make better crabcakes than any restaurant around so we buy a couple of pounds and some shrimp and have a seafood feast in the condo one night for much less than a restaurant (and much better too!). They have lots of prepared stuff.
The Minit Market on 33rd and Philadelphia is a little hole in the wall place with a real butcher shop, but the most awesome thing about it is the doughnuts they make fresh every day. Get there early because they sell out, but they are worth it, super yummy and hot from the oven. Go straight to the back of the store and get in line. They are not the raised kind, but the cakey kind, great for dunking, and my favorite is the cinnamon sugar.

That's all I can think of right now! I always told the kids we are there for the beach, not all the touristy stuff, and we always manage to have a great time! We could go anywhere else we wanted for a summer vacation, but the kids always want to go for their OC week. We'll be there for a week in July. HTH and have a wonderful vacation!

Oooh, I LOVE some of these tips. Especially the ice show idea and I had no idea about the donuts - my husband will love you forever!! :cool1:

a quick trip up to Rehobeth is fun. The BW isn't near as overwhelming as OC, MD's.

Not sure how young your younger ones are.. but they may like the rides on RB's BW... they are MUCH less expensive than OC's pier.

And we like Cape Henlopen or the Delaware State Park right on Rt 1, $8 for an out of state car. And they have bath houses and a concession stand too. The beach isn't nearly as crowded.

Best kept secret is to change the destination to Myrtle Beach! :thumbsup2

Ha ha!

Seriously, I'm amazed at how more expensive it is for just about everything. A coworker is going to Ocean City and staying at a complete dump (we did an impromtu trip last year and stayed at the same place ) that is on the other side of the road from the beach, has 2 double beds that have to be 40 years old (could not sleep on them), mini fridge and stovetop, and he is paying $620 for 6 nights. We are going to be ocean front with a balcony, 2 room suite (bedroom with 2 doubles and living room separated by the kitchenette with full size fridge and stove and oven) have 2 pools, a lazy river, and not have to deal with road traffic walking out to the beach for $570 for 6 nights.

Also, it isn't called "Ocean Sh**y" for no reason. Last year it was very dirty everywhere. And the water temperature is so nice at MB compared to OC.

I've been following this thread for some ideas, and mrodgers your help is not helpful at all. It's a tips thread for people that are going there, not someone asking whether or not they should.

It really is expensive. We've taken free dining trips to Disney including park tickets that cost less than a weekly OC rental in the summer.

However, we have no choice but to head down there every summer and pay those prices because DS's team has a baseball tournament, so we eat fried food to our hearts' content and seek out all the fun cheesy touristy stuff. I'll be following this thread, but in the end, we'll probably be the ones at the boardwalk and playing mini-golf anyway! :rotfl:

Just a few more weeks and I'll be eating a Fractured Prune...ah, I can already taste it. :lmao:

I thought of another off-the-beaten-path thing we enjoy - if you haven't been to the LIfesaving Museum, it's worth a visit and inexpensive. It's right on the boardwalk in the old Lifesaving Station, at the beginning across from the inlet. It's well done, full of local historical artifacts, history of the beach patrol and lifesaving station and items salvaged from the many shipwrecks off the coast.

I know lots of folks like to head South to VA or NC beaches. I encourage that - less crowded beach for me! I think Mrodgers should start a "Why you should go to Myrtle Beach rather than OC Md" thread!

Holy crap! I live here and I didn't even think of some of these things. Looks like I have some ideas for the weekend, lol!

Just a few more weeks and I'll be eating a Fractured Prune...ah, I can already taste it. :lmao:
Fractured Prune? What the heck is that? Sounds disgusting to me, LOL.

One must have for Ocean City, even if you don't plan to eat anything else outside of eating your own food you brought, would be Thrasher's french fries. Thrasher's was the most looked forward to for me for our impromtu long weekend trip last year. I told my wife I haven't been to OC in 23 years and we plan to do Myrtle Beach and south for all other vacations so it would be our only trip to Ocean City. Thus, I will be eating Thrasher's french fries for lunch and dinner (or after dinner) every day. That's just what I did, LOL.

We were on 17th street and it was just a few days, so we didn't go out to any restaurants for dinner for those few nights. We left the stuff on the beach and walked down the boardwalk for pizza for the kids for lunch and I ate Thrasher's french fries and in the evening walked the whole boardwalk grabbing food for dinner and I ate Thrasher's french fries.

There is nothing in the world like Thrasher's french fries at Ocean City.

Fractured Prune! Custom-made (while you wait) donuts! They are so good!

There are a few other Fractured Prune locations outside the beaches. Once in a while we go to one in Halethorpe. There used to be one in Annapolis in the Market House but unfortunately that closed with everything else in there.

I don't like those FP donuts, too much stuff on them, and I am even a sweets person, but these are too sweet for me! And I'll eat a few of Thrasher's fries with some vinegar, but they are really oily and can't take too many. But from the lines at these places, I am definitely in the minority! My DH and DS always have to get a big bucket of those fries (and I do mean bucket), so I can grab my handful and that's enough. Personally, I want some of the caramel corn from Dolle's on the boardwalk, and maybe some anisette taffy or an ice cream from Dumsers. You all are making me wish I was on the boardwalk pigging out right now.

One thing I found out about Dolle's was that they are open year-round. And you can get the popcorn mail-order (don't think I did this online, I think I called it in, but it was a few years ago). They had really cute beach themed Christmas tins, and I ordered them for teacher gifts. Since everyone around here goes "downy oshun" in the summer, it was a fun blast of vacation in the winter. The teachers loved it.

Most definitely Thrasher's with vinegar and Fisher's caramel popcorn (much prefer it to Dolle's). In my opinion, the best mini golf is the Old Pro on 28th street, it's like a medieval theme. It has more holes than the normal mini golf.

I live close to OC and in fact spend quite a bit of time there at my parent's condo. Cheap outing- the Lifesaving Museum at the inlet $3 per person/ $2 for seniors and get a very cool look at the "old days"
Another cheap outing-Assateague Nat'l seashore and visitors center. You can pay each time or purchase a year long pass for $30.oo. Or you can take the "Bayberry Drive" and turn around at the toll booth; still walk through the visitor's center for free.
-More cheap fun-during the charter fishing season (June-Sept), stop in the marinas (Bahia, Sunset Marina, White Marlin Marina) late afternoons and see the big fish (they hope) that come in like tuna, mahi
Eating out is outrageous in OC; there's no way around it. Restaurant.com has a few offerings right now. We recently ate at Harborside using a R.com cert. Decent food. Big Peckers Bar and Grill on 72nd (about) has basic pub food in good size portions at resonable prices. Most of the restaurants offer early bird specials.
-Many hotel lobbies have copies of coupon books like "Sunny Day". We got one last summer in the lobby of the Comfort Suites in W. OC or you can go to the website. Many strip malls have outlets for free newspapers with coupons (ex. "The Beachcomber").
It's worth a ride to Fenwick Island to Sea Shell City. Upstairs they have a shipwreck museum that's free and showcases artifacs found off shore.

I second the motion on the crabs. I've never ever eaten a decent steamed crab in OC except the ones we've brought from home. Rippons should be good, though, they're local.
-There is a website for discounted hotel rooms that I've used before that's run by an outfit called "IB Strategies". I've typically found the best room prices here, although not necessarily the hotel I wanted.

I do agree that a lot of the FP donuts have "too much" but those O.C. Sands melt right in your mouth!!! I'm not a fan of the ones with chocolate.

As far as crabs, I wish I could remember the name of the place we got them last time. We went parasailing off of Rte 20 (Fenwick Island) and asked the people working there where the absolute meatiest crabs were, and picked up a couple dozen on the way home. Coming from OC it's not too far down Rte 20 on the left. They were caught that day and steamed while we waited. They called them mediums, but were fatter than what we get that's considered "jumbo's" or "swampdogs" at home.

Not to miss: Bayside Skillet

Super place for breakfast, they are famous for their Crepes and Chantilly cream. My favorite is the kids cinnamon sugar crepes with syrup and Chantilly Cream... delicious.

Side note: My BF is terrified of Frontier town. Apparently as a kid he rode the train they have there... and a "robber" stole all his "loot"... :lmao:

Near the inlet, inside the Trimper's Rides area, there is a big garage-y type building full of older (antique-ish) rides. Not only are the machines interesting from a historical perspective, but there is a glass case on one wall nearby with pictures of OC from the early 1900's... I found it by accident last year, and it was fascinating... there's also a blurb about the haunted house, apparently it was designed by a guy who was famous in his day for attractions, and this is one of his last surviving pieces-- which explains why no one tears that mess down.. ;)

Also, near 9th street on the beach, there is a little seawall that juts out and causes the wave-pattern to be different... the result is AWESOME shell collecting right in that spot.

So those are two things that are completely free... but only if you're a nature geek, a history geek, and don't mind the cost of parking.

Oh and another note about Trimpers Amusements. They've offered (every previous season) an afternoon ride all day bracelet for a fixed price. This beats buying tickets. The bracelet "expires" about 6 o clock at night but you have a choice of a lot of rides;and is a great alternative if it's cloudy. We always bought this for our daughter (now age 20) and it seemed to be most economical once she was eligible for the "big" rides. This includes the enclosed rides and the big rides behind that building. I wonder if they still have it?

Yes, there is the Thrasher's in Rehoboth Beach and the Thrasher's in Dover (it's in the Mall Food Court).

Not far from Ocean City is the Delaware Seashore State Park and there they also have a Lifesaving Museum. It's in a real old Lifesaving Station. You can also go Crab Fishing there. We stayed at the Cottages at the Indian River Marina the year before last. They also have a variety of programs about the wildlife, kayak tours, etc. http://www.destateparks.com/park/delaware-seashore/programs/index.asp
