Best Italian?

I lived on Long Island most of my life and worked in Manhattan. One thing I've learned is that there's no such thing as good Italian, Chinese, or Mexican food outside of NY. People who have never lived in NY have given me pointers on the "must try" restaurants for great pizza and Italian food. Most are borderline inedible, but it tastes good to the these people since they have no basis for comparison.

H'mmm I had a risotto in Milan that was pretty good, and the Duck I was served in Shanghai didn't taste too bad either ... must be mistaken though

I vote for Portobello Yacht Club...but don't expect to find chicken parm or your standard "american italian" fare....it's regional italian---but very VERY good. Plus it's my DD5's favorite restaurant. She pitches a fit everytime we go to DTD and eat somewhere else.

Unless you grew up in an Italian household, you don't know real Italian food. I feel bad for people who have to eat at a restaurant to get Italian, even in New York.

That being said, I had a pretty good Osso Bucco at Alfredo's at Epcot. I have not tried Mama Melrose. Ton'y is OK. What made my one trip there good was that we were seated outside and were able to watch the Main Street Electrical Parade from our table.

Palio is on the list.

I know it is not part of the OP's question, but Antonio's in Celebration is nice for Italian food.

Ooooooooohhh yeah! VERY good point...actually where I'm having my wedding reception! It's hands down my favorite italian place in Orlando..well, with the exception of Antonios on Sandlake, and Antonios in Maitland...all of his restaurants are fab!

Great answer! And I concur. IYou can't beat mom's cooking, her eggplant parm has spoiled me...actually my mission in life is to find a restaurant that has an edible eggplant parm. Whenever we go out for Italian, and I see it on the menu and I think its a place we we be going back to; I order it as an extra dish; just to taste - I never like it, and the DH's get to take it to work for lunch the next day, He's not Italian and will eat Ragu if I serve it to him)..... So OP, I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you as we don't eat Italian food in WDW....good luck on your quest

We ate at Alfredo's last Christmas and really enjoyed it. It had been several years since we ate there and we did not like it in the past. It was nice to see that it had improved since our earlier visits.

We enjoyed this restaurant as well, though I know it's gotten mixed reviews here. The service was excellent, and my DD (age 7) loved her food.

I have not been at Palio's lately, it was like two years back and I thought it was ok.

I have eaten at Alfredo's lately for dinner and thought it was excellent...attentive service, good food, and fun entertainment.

I must agree about Alfredo's.....yummy lasagna!

Haven't been to Mama Melrose in years, we loved it in the beginning, but then it just seemed to be an average restuarant. Maybe we should give it another try!

My family is from Italy, so I am pretty picky when it comes to Italian food. I had one good meal at Alfredos a long time ago, and one terrible meal there 2 years ago. I will not be going back unfortunately. I have been to both Tony's and Mama Melrose's, and both are ok. I would eat at both again, but I would not call either OUTSTANDING Italian food. I guess it just depends on your personal taste. Of all of them, I liked the atmosphere in Tony's the best.

On a side note (for the New Yorkers on this post), I have not been lucky finding good restaurants in Manhattan when I visit to go to shows and whatnot. I'd love (and appreciate) some suggestions, especially for Italian food. If you have any, PM me! Thanks!

formernyer - you embarrass this LI girl (PJ)!! Which is it - or are glad or not glad you left NY? Love the food here, but nothing else??? Granted, Florida has never stereotypically been regarded as the hotbed of gourmet cooking, but WDW does more than ok MOST of the time.

Yeah, New Yorkers are pretty arrogant that way. What I found, when I recovered from being one, is that there is great food outside of New York.
