I'm getting ready to start training for the ToT 10 Miler and W&D 1/2 Marathon this week, and I'm looking for a good app on my iPhone to track my progress. I've done some searching, and I can't seem to find one that everything that I'm looking for. I was thinking I might have overlooked something and thought I would check here and see what you guys use.

I'm looking for something to track my cardio workouts as well as my weight training workouts. It seems like the only things I can find are either running apps or weight apps. I have seen several that have the added feature of being able to track your measurements and weight, so that would be a nice perk. I would also like to have instructional pictures and/or videos about how to use some of the weight machines at the gym. I'll be working out at a neighborhood fitness center, so there won't be a pro there to show me how to use them. I would also like the app to have GPS so if I run/walk outside, it can map my progress and track my minutes per mile and all the good stuff like a bunch of running apps. Website backup and access would also be nice. :cheer2:

I know that my dream app will probably cost me money, and that's okay. I'm willing to pay the price for an app like this because I will most definitely use the heck out of it.

So if this kind of app doesn't already exist, can someone make it for me????

I have to add that I don't care about calorie counting or nutrition, so that part of the app would go completely unused with me.

Thanks, guys!!

I have toyed with many apps over the years but have a 10 year history built on Training Peaks. They have a mobile app that ties into the database very well. I use a garmin with HR monitor and keep record of weights and reps in the notes section of the strength section. TP has a new course section that I have not played with yet. There is a better than most nutrition section complete with scanner.

TP is in the middle of a bunch of revisions - most of which are for the good. I am member at their higher level so I have access to lots of cool analysis tools. One of these analyses is a simple effort comparison tool based on historic workouts. It really pushes you. I went with TP way back as it had a coaches interface. It allows me subscribe folks and have analysis tools for folks all across the country.

I use another App on the iPhone. RunKeeper is a little weak but for my specific use, it works well. I use it when I have folks wanting to find me along the course. But subscribing to their service spectators have the ability to get near time data on your position. It will plot where you went and offers a music tie in as well as coaching or calling out splits.

The best app I can find that seems to have the most items on my wish list is something called GymGoal Plus. But it doesn't have GPS tracking, so I would still need to use something like RunKeeper.

Is RunKeeper the best running/GPS app that you would recommend?

Thanks!!

I rely on my Garmin. The other apps out there with gps positioning are run keeper, nike + and daily mile. With all these you must turn off the 3G and wifi antennae. If you do not you will be without a tracker in short order. I find that these work though not as reliable as a garmin.

Hope this helps

I use MapMyRun+, and it tracks me via GPS. Bodybuilding.com has an app that tracks exercises (weights/cardio) and has pictures/demonstrations on how to do them.

I am a big mapmyrun user online. I deleted the mobile app some time back but I see that they have several recent upgrades. May take a look.

I'm not sure you're going to be able to find one app to do all of that, but I do have some recommendations for various apps. I liked Run Coach Pro for my training plans, but they merged with MapMyRun, which I haven't used a whole lot but hear is awesome. I also use the Spark People Diet and Food Tracker to keep track of my fitness minutes and workouts.

But my favorite fitness app is Nike Fit Club. I love the strength training workouts on it, though they use medicine balls and dumbells. I love, love, love this app!

Hope this helps! Best of luck! See ya in September! :)

Endomondo is really cool. I haven't used it a ton because I'm doing a C25K followed by a 10K bridge at the moment, but I do have this one and used it to customize some interval runs coming off of a recent injury. It has the GPS component, and it has a *slew* of activity types that you can track. I read about it at Cool Mom Tech (a blog) and thought I'd give it a try. It's a $4 app, but it seems to go the extra mile (haha) compared to other apps that focus on one type of activity.

I'm doing the ToT 10-miler, too! :)

I use runtastic pro. It tracks running by gps and seems (for me anyway) more accurate than the map my run app. It also has manual activities like treadmill, strength training and elliptical training. It also has a ton of other activities that you may never use like table tennis, basketball etc. lol. My favorite thing about it is when you are running it "dubs" in over your music and tells you your stats (pace, calories burned, total time and distance) based on when you want to hear them I.e. every mile or km etc. and it stores all your stats and shows you graphs similar to the garmin watches.
It was the best app I found. I tried 5-6 before I settled on this one.

I use Endomondo too and it's been overall pretty good for $3.99. It gives you GPS, calories, distance, time... You can set it to cover a certain distance so it'll tell you what mile you're at, total time, lap time (or mile time), and anticipated finish time without ever looking at it and at the end it gives you your split times. I use it because I didn't want to pay $200 for a Garmin and I take my phone withe me anyway... Everything goes online and is easy to look through.

I'm a big fan of RunKeeper. For anything involving covering a distance (be it running, walking, hiking, biking, etc), I can't think of a better solution. It is lacking when it comes to strength/cardio workouts.
