best inexpensive heavy-duty sewing machine?

Hi! I'm looking for an inexpensive, simple sewing machine that will sew through multiple layers of fabric. I want to zig-zag patches and appliques onto garments, and don't want to break my expensive embroidery machine with the menial task.
