Best hotel for squeezing 2 families?

I was wondering if there is a good hotel that would allow one to squeeze two families. I was thinking that a nice 1-bedroom would work, such that one family can stay in the main bedroom and the other family in the living room. This would only work if the rooms were nice, otherwise, it might be easier to just get two separate rooms.

On-site or off-site? Budget? What about a 2 bedroom villa in one of the DVC buildings? Disney has max occupancies so you would need to check those out.

There are family suites at Desert Inn and other hotels, for up to about 8 people. How much can you afford? Another idea is to rent a house or condo.

It may not be the nicest hotel around and the parking is awful, but the rooms are big and they have several configurations, some of which will accommodate 2 families. If you need a big pool, this is not your place, but it is right across the street from Disney Resort area. We have stayed there using the big shared suite with my brother's family. That's 7 of us. Four adults, 3 kids. We will be staying again next month. It's basically 2 pretty big hotel rooms, and we split the cost of the suite. We have also shared with several people in a suite at Camelot Hotel and split the cost around. It is also across the street and not very far.

Sophie - If money were not object, I'd like to have a room per family at the Disneyland Hotel. DVC came out to about $420 per living area per night. (ie, 420 for studio, or 880 for 1 bedroom). We have some means, but I'm always looking for options that can keep us together without a lot of fuss.

For the purposes of this post, I'm looking at budget options. I'm not opposed to staying off-site with one room each family. There is definitely a lot to say to have some privacy. I just figure we'll be at the parks all day and it won't matter anyway.

Gracie - Thanks for mentioning Desert Inn. I'll check it out. Would enjoy any other suggestions.

We stayed at a really nice Embassy Suites in Glendale and would love to find something equally nice.

If you want to walk to the park I would check these rooms out.

Also you can check this map out. There is an area at the bottom left side that shows hotel rooms for large families.

We only have 4 in our family but we always get two separate sleeping areas with two bathrooms so more people can get ready at one time, just easier on us. So if you have two families I would think you would want at least two bathrooms.

Wow - hijacking a bit but THANK YOU!
WHY oh WHY do most of these NOT come up from the DLR site as options for my family of 8?? They only suggest Staybridge, Anaheim Residence Inn, a Best Western (not Stovall's - can't remember name) and Crowe Plaza! A few of these would be very good options for my family of 8!

Because the motels only presell the regular rooms to Walt Disney Travel. They have to sell the rooms at a discount to the company to be listed on the DIsney site. They do better selling these rooms to their own customers.

Thank you for explaining.
"Good Neighbor" is so confusing.
Then again :( we almost never stay in hotels so maybe this is common knowledge and I'm just behind. :P

Most of the hotels are pretty struct about their maximum occupancy. If you have over 5, you're going to need separate rooms or a suite.

We stayed at the Desert Inn in a C2 suite. Not fancy, but clean, and room for 10.

Also, ask yourself if you really want adults to have to sleep on a sofa bed, as most rooms seem to consider a sofa bed as adequate for 2 adults. Not me, especially after a long day in the parks!

Also, several of the "driving" hotels are on the ART shuttle routes, so you really wouldn't have to drive and park every day.

When I was looking at a hotel for two families (3 adults, 3 kids) I struggled finding anything other than the Desert Inn & Suites that would allow more than 5 people in a room. Fine for me, because it's my go-to hotel, but I wanted to give my friends some options.

We ended up reserving a C2 suite at the Desert Inn & Suites because it has two full bathrooms.

One nice thing about this hotel is that they have room floor plans posted on their website, so you can get a clear sense of what the rooms look like... For example, a C1 suite has one and a half baths, while B1, B2, & C2 have two full baths. Some rooms have more floor space than others. The floor plans are quite good at helping you get the lay of the land.

That said, the pool is an indoor pool, and fairly small. Some people see indoor pools as a plus. I don't. But the kiddos in my party don't care. The continental breakfast is also very basic. They started providing boiled eggs sometime in the past few years, though, and it's great to have some protein available.

There may be other good options for suites nearby, but the Desert Inn & Suites is something to consider.

Have fun!!!

Embassy Suites might work. Also, Marriott Suites looks pretty nice.

I would not recommend a room at Marriott Suites for two families to share. Their family suite has 2 double beds (not queens) and the fold out in the living area is only a double as well. We stayed there last year, it was me, DH, DS5 and my mom. It was tight with just us. Only one bathroom too.

That said, we liked the hotel and would stay there again if it wasn't so far from the parks. Their rooms are very inexpensive on LMTClub, $78 for a family suite in November. You have to join LMTClub and pay the fee, but just google for a promo code and you will find one.

Good luck!

Have you looked at Ramada Maingate? they have huge three room suites in their one year old new building. We are staying there in a couple of weeks. We paid $390 a night plus tax (so about $228 a family a night). The room is 950 sq ft. 2 private sleeping rooms with 2 queen beds (so total of 4 queen beds plus sofa sleeper) in each plus 2 full bathrooms and a parlor area in between them. They have free parking and free limited breakfast. FYI: hotel is under construction right now, but on the older buildings, not the new building where the suites are located. Here is a link:

We made the mistake of staying at Residence Inn Anaheim Maingate. It's horrible. Not only is the location inconvenient because you can't turn left into it, which is the direction you come from the parks, and it is run down and dirty, and the staff, while not rude or awful, is mediocre.

If you are going to stay at a Residence Inn, stay at the Garden Grove location, which is straight down Harbor Blvd. It actually takes 1-3 minutes less time to drive back and forth to that one. The Garden Grove location also has elevators (the Anaheim one only has stairs), and it's newer and cleaner. Also, the Garden Grove location is across the street from Walgreens and Target and several moderately priced restaurants. This is much more practical, IMHO, than anything at Gardenwalk (if you need a mall, you can hop on the 5 for 15 minutes and get to Costa Mesa, which is one of the largest malls in the country).

Another vote for Desert Inn and Suites. Large adjoining room suites with full bathrooms. Mini fridges are actually quite large. Its right next to a Denny's of the continental breakfast isn't enough. And the best part is its super close to the parks. You can easily run back and forth to your room of you needed. 10 minutes there and back for an adult.

Most hotel rooms, even suites, have a maximum occupancy of 4 people, sometimes 5. The exception is special, large family suites, offered at a few hotels such as Desert Inn or Ramada Maingate. The issue with overcrowding is not just uncomfortable, it is a fire hazard. You also would want at least 1 bathroom per four people, too.

You could get Embassy Suites or Marriott Suites, but you would need two suites.

"Good Neighbor" is so confusing.
Then again :( we almost never stay in hotels so maybe this is common knowledge and I'm just behind. :P

"Good Neighbor" means that the hotel paid Disney for the designation, and nothing else... It doesn't mean they are Disney-approved, that they are nice rooms, that they are family friendly, or anything else beyond the fact that they had the money to pay for the Good Neighbor designation.... Don't feel bad about not knowing; it's a commonly misunderstood designation, and sounds like it should be something so much more! And people who don't find the Disboards, and end up just booking through Disneyland.com may (or, most likely may not) have the best deals overall.

Another vote for DI&S!

We actually haven't stayed there yet, but they had the most appropriate suites for 2 adult couples travelling together (private bedrooms and bathrooms) for a decent price, AND just across the road from DLR! I also really liked that they had floorplans of their rooms available on their website. I wish all hotels did that!

There are a few options available for multi-room suites. You should be able to get something where both families can have their own comfortable bedrooms, and you can use the living area for living! With two whole families, I'd definitely go for two bathrooms as well. Can't even imagine trying to get ready for a day out with 8 people having to share the same bathroom!
