We are a family of 5 with twin 11 year olds and a 14 year old. We have all been to DisneyWorld many times and love the Contemporary and the Polynesian. We are visiting for 3 days to CA next March. Any hotel recommendations?

Maybe the GCH, it's a more premium version of WL. I'd also say the DLH but you may want to see where the pool is at when it comes time to make reservations. They are redoing the whole pool area and that may be important to the kids.

Otherwise their are lots of hotels on Harbor Dr. that are nice and close. Think Walking from CR to MK and cut it in half. But they are 2-3 stars. For anthing nicer you will be taking a shuttle to the resort.

We just returned from 5 nights at the Grand Californian, and we loved it! The rooms are larger than what's at the WL in FL, but not as big as Contep or Poly. Totally enjoyed it, and loved being so close. We liked walking from MK to Contep, and walking from our room at GCH to DCA was less than 5 minutes! If Poly and Contep are your speed (like us!), you won't be disappointed with GCH.

Ya it just depends on what you want to spend. If $$ is not an issue than GC can't be beat IMO.

is the pool closed?
I am booked there in August nd they never said anything to me about it. Just that they were redoing some rooms around the hotel.

No, it's not closed at GCH. I do know they're about to redo the DLH pool, though.

It depends on what you want to spend. My sister and family just stayed at the Portofino (very close walking distance) and they had a very large room that was quite nice for right over $100 a night.

If you want the whole Disney feeling that you get at the WDW hotels you will definitely have to stay at one of the 3 Disney hotels. If money is not an issue I think everyone will agree the GC is the best. I have not stayed at any of the on-site hotels but think they would be the only ones comparable to the Contemporary or the Polynesian. By the way, I would love to stay at the Polynesian. ;)

If you want to stay on site then the GC is the way to go like everyone said. But if you want more room and don't mind being farther away we really loved the Doubletree Guest Suites in Harbor. It was a lovely hotel and you get a lot of room. The only downer to it was taking the ART shuttle.
If it was a choice between the Doubletree and Grand Californian I would choose the Grand any day, I just thought I'd let you know there was another option if you want more space than one room.
