DH and I will be coming to WDW the last week of August. We normally go in late Oct/early Nov. I swore we would never go in the heat of August, but we have some DVC points that have to be used. I was wondering what are, and where can I find some hand held fans/coolers for our trip. DH HATES the heat, so it would be best for me to have something in advance to keep him as happy as possible. Thanks in advance!!

Disney sells water misting fans. So does Wal-Mart. Guess who has them for less money? ;)

I've never bought one, but I've been spritzed by the ill-behaved children of people at WDW. It works.

(For a guy who hates heat, Disney in August seems like a bad choice, lol!)

Good luck!

Thanks kaligal. I refuse to pay Disney prices, so thanks for the suggestion. I could have sworn I saw a trip report or a post on a thread about a powerful fan that wasn't quite so bulky.

I truly feel bad for my DH, but we have 160 points that have to be used by August 31st. It would be like throwing over $2000 dollars away. Plus he will most likely starting a new career in October, so our annual trip is out of the question. So now I will try to make him as comfortable as possible! :lmao:

We have o2 cool keychain misting fans. They are about size of iphone and they are small enough to be hang from belt loop or bag. It's powerful and use one AA battery. One lasted our whole week trip to WDW last Sept. We are taking taking them again coming trip. We bought them at local Walmart for about $5~6. It's at sporting section. We like ours much better than bulky, expensive Dinsey ones.

Wal-Mart has a pretty good selection. Mister fans that are small and hook to a belt loop, larger misting fans, necklace fans, and handheld fans. The bigger ones like Disney sells (Wal-Mart has for $9) are nice since they hold a lot of water and the blades are bigger. But the bulk can be tough. Get something with a strap and that will help. I plan on filling our big ones with ice and water. See you in August!:cool1:

We are another O2Cool fan out there! We got ours in 2007 and have been using them since. They are light weight and wonderful! We would not have been able to go every year in Labor day weekend without them!

I have probably posting this pic many times but here's what we have::rotfl2:

Well I can't find it on Brookstone's website, but before our trip 2 years ago in July, my parents got us Brookstone Cool It! personal fans. They work really well, they were a little more expensive I think, but I thought they worked better than some of the ones we've used in the past. This is what they look like:

The summer heat is tough, but there are definitely ways to combat it - I find the fans very helpful, and of course having a water bottle is a must so you don't get dehydrated. We'll be there the end of August as well. Stay cool!

I need to make a hand held fan iPhone app.

It wouldn’t out put any air. It would just display an image of a fan spinning around. When people ask, I would just say it cools me on a psychological level.

I think people would buy it!

I looked. There are already three fake fan apps out there.

Who knew? Crazy has already been done.

Thanks for the picture, that really helps  I am also going in August and from past experience, it is hot :cool1:

We have gone in late July for the past 3 years and it is hot, center of the sun hot :sunny:

With that being said we have tried all the fans misting/non misting portable and larger ones. The ones they sell in the parks worked the best for us. I too do not do well in the heat but like you this was the only time we could travel.

The fans from the park were such a help. We would fill them each morning with frozen water bottles from the fridge. Throughout the day you can get cups of ice from CS to refill. The combination of cold water hitting you with the fan was a big relief.

We also hit every AM rope drop and would each lunch in air conditioning. Then head back to the hotel for swiming or in my case a nap in more air conditioning :rotfl2:

Doing this really helped me survive the brutal heat of late July and Aug. Good luck and have a magical trip :goodvibes

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone that posted a reply! :goodvibes:goodvibes
I am really debating between the larger and the smaller fan/mister. I really want to stay as cool as possible when you are vacationing on the sun's surface otherwise known as vacationing in WDW in July/August/September. Like I said before we typically go to WDW in October/November/December, so this will be a shock to our systems. We are planning on being in the parks super early with a LONG afternoon break at the pool and room, and then back to the parks in the evening. However, we went in May 2 years ago and my darling DH was sweating and complaining as soon as we walked out of the room. I know he will be a joy to be around in 38 days . So at this point I am willing to spend whatever, to make things easier on me/him next month. :rolleyes1

I am not going to carry the backpack that I normally do, but a crossover. That is why I am questioning the bulk of the larger fans. The thing that makes me think they might be a good idea is to have them filled with ice so that we can have a cooler mist for a longer period of time. Decisions, decisions! Thanks again!

Another vote for getting to a park at rope drop and then go back to your resort for a rest or swim during the hottest, most crowded part of the day. Then, go back out in the evening when it starts to cool down. The mister fans are fine, but IMO they don't really break the heat and humidity. Jumping into an air conditioned shop works much better. :) And drink lots and lots of water.

Just a bit of a heads up based on personal experience....it will be so hot that the ice will melt QUICKLY. So if that's one of your primary reasons for getting a larger one, it may not be quite as helpful as you're imagining, sorry!! :)

Thanks! I was worried about the ice melting fast in the 95 to 100 degree heat. I don't want anymore bulk then needed...I think I am going to go with the smaller fans. Thanks so much for the advice!

I've been on a mission to find a new handheld fan/mister and have thus far been unsuccessful. Last year I got a new one at WDW because I lost my old one. The ones they now sell in the parks have foam blades instead of plastic like the old ones, and I don't think they do as good a job. Someone on the boards mention Misty Mates, but it looks to me like they are just misters and don't have a fan. I've been to all the sporting goods stores in my area, Target and Kmart and haven't found any. We usually go to WDW in August, and it's a necessity for me to have one. I'd really like to find one that's not quite as big as the one I have and that works better. The Brookstone one looks nice, but it's apparently no longer available. So my hunt continues...

I just picked up two of these ($4 each) at WalMart for my August trip. I haven't tried them before, but there were times last year I could have used one. I don't want to haul around one of the big ones but I'm hoping these will work. Lot more refills needed, but that shouldn't be a problem. I'm glad to see that you liked them.
