Anyone know of or use a free web hosting site that allows users to use FTP to upload their files?

Because I'm creating the webpage in Publisher, I'm not interested in sites that require users to use the sites tools to build the website (e.g., Yahoo).

Someone I know is starting a new business and has a simple website created. He can't figure out how to embed a video clip (not interested in linking to YouTube). I thought it would be interesting to learn how to do this so I offered to look into it for him. I want to do some testing and need to find somewhere that will host my testing for free. I do not want to have the responsibility of having access to his website, etc.

TIA for any suggestions!

cheers,

Your web provider should have provided you with a little free webspace, I reckon - they always do over here.

dcentity2000, that was such an obvious and common sense solution! Thx a mint for that. :thumbsup2

So I spent the last few hours checking out how to ftp to the personal home page and when I finally got stumped, I chatted with technical support to find out that it doesn't support ftp :sad1:

Back to square 1. Anyone else know of any sites?

cheers,

I know Verizon does have FTP.

Also, there was some FTP software downloads and some website that it works with that allowed for FTP downloads. Somehow it interfaced with AOL when I had it.

Now I simply upload my complete webpage files to my Google webpage account and it's done.

As for an embedded a video clip I use photobucket.com. I have my photobucket account set to privacy mode so the people visiting my website see the video clip. It's in Flash Macromedia mode. Then I use whatever code there is to embed the video clip and it is seamless.

Imzadi, thx a mint for the detailed reply :goodvibes

Unfortunately, I'm on TimeWarner so don't get Verizon's ftp feature. Your note about uploading your finished pages to Google Webpages, made me reconsider my tactics...maybe I could create my test in Publisher and then just upload all those files to my google wp and see how it worked. :upsidedow

Well, when I started uploading the files, the first one I did was the video clip. Guess what, I thought I'd test it just to make sure it worked from that site and it wouldn't open. I then tried it from the original e-mail attachment with the same result! So it may be that my friend is unable to get it to work cuz the original file is corrupt! AHA! So I've e-mailed my friend to see if they can get a new file and whether that fixes it. In case it doesn't... :scared:

Question for you re: Photobucket...My friend does not want to use YouTube to link to his video as it is not very professional looking in his line of work. You mentioned your photobucket link is "seamless". Which code do you use (Email & IM, Direct Link, HTML Code, or IMG Code)? And does it just show the video in a popup without any Photobucket advertising/info? Thx :wave2:

Once you get to your Google webpage, there is a column on the far right where you can just upload each whole file/page. That's how I got around having to use their templates which didn't do what I wanted them to do. Even their "blank page" didn't allow me to do what I wanted. Also, I didn't have to go and redo all my HTML coding to fit with Google's format. :headache: Then I copied & used each page's URL as it appears in the browser bar as my web URL.

I never "published" my Google page, as I more, use it to file and host each separate page.

Instead, since I had already bought a web domain name at GoDaddy.com, I simply had my domain point or re-direct to that first Goggle page URL i had uploaded, then used each Goggle page URL as a link to the next page.

Hope that makes sense. :upsidedow Keep asking questions if you need me to try to be more clear. :goodvibes

As for the web clip embedding, I just checked my Photobucket. They provide an embed link code, so all you have to do is insert it in your page where you want it. (I was also later able to change the size settings as it specifies in the embed code, what size the image will appear as.) But embed it the way it is given first, so as not to mess yourself up. :)

It does sound like your original web clip may have been corrupted. I originally had mine on a DVD, in some other format, (a simple .mpeg maybe? :scratchin ) and Photobucket was even able to automatically change the format when I uploaded it, so that it would play through Photobucket's Flash Macromedia player. :thumbsup2

Thx a mint again. I'll wait to hear back from my friend and post back if I get stuck again. :lmao:

cheers,
