Best free virus protection?

I know this has been discussed before in the past; my Webroot just expired & I know there is freeware that I have heard recommended by DISers.
Looking for your input.

AVG, avast and microsoft security essentials are all free and good.

I use Avast for antivirus (LOVE it - never had a problem, and it's not only free, but it also isn't the resource hog that Norton and Kaspersky were for me). I also keep Malwarebytes loaded and updated for spyware.

We use AVG at home.

I like it better than the McAfee that I use at the office and on my work laptop.

Consumer Reports current issue rated Avast a little higher than AVG, and those two higher than the others.
