Best flight prices FROM Europe?

Hello all. I am new to this board but it seems the place to ask this question:)

I am spoiled by being able to fly to MCO for under $200 a person from a previous homes in New Hampshire and Detroit. So, the sticker shock for airfare from our new home in Germany is hitting hard. I really do not know where to look for the best prices for tickets going from Europe to the U.S. We live close to the Frankfort, Germany airport so that would be the best possible place to fly from--but we could get somewhere else for substantial savings. Can anyone recommend good sites to look at for airfare deals, good airlines to check, etc.?

THANK YOU:goodvibes

Charter deals, absolutely. I'm not sure how many you will find from Germany to MCO, since Germany is not a really large market for Disney. (IME, Germans tend to go more for Florida's beach destinations.)

Anyway, ask Bavaria -- she would definitely know. She probably doesn't take charters too often, as she flies so much for business that she racks up FF miles for leisure travel, but she knows the German travel market, no question.

Disney is very popular with UK tourists, so you might have luck taking a cheap scheduled flight to the UK (Ryanair or Easyjet, etc.) and then taking a charter from there. Look at the UK trip planning board to see which tour operators they use most often.

Your biggest issue is NOT the underlying fare. It's the fee's/taxs. Seriously I booked a 9 Euro flight within Europe this year that cost me another 100 in "fees/taxes" and they are worse going to the states.

I think that you need to adjust to a 'low' fare of in the $700 range, probably more. You might do better from the UK, but it's still not going to be cheap. Perhaps Disneyland Paris?

Sign up for the "deals" sent out by Luftansa. They have had some decent sales to the US from Frankfort.

Yes, Carol is right about those taxes. On my last trip through Heathrow I got a GREAT fare ($200!), but the final cost was more than double that because of the fees and taxes.

Some airports (especially in the UK) have higher fees than others; it pays to shop around.

Thanks to bothof you.
Yes, I have certainly noticed that about half of the costs of the fares I am finding are taxes and fees:rolleyes: I paid more than my airfare in taxes and fees to accompany DH to Budapest this week. It is par for the course, but I don't haev to like it:rotfl2:
I was hoping some of you here knew which airports had much lower fees, or what charter companies I could look into to do better. The fares I am finding are about $650 pp--maybe I should be grateful for that and jump :upsidedow(though those have held pretty much steady for months now).
We have a trip booked for this December and another for next September which were booked before we moved and involve many of our best friends--so canceling these trips to go to DLP and not see our friends (a bigger draw than the mouse honestly--but we live all over so it is a good meeting place) is not happening (though I am still afriad of what the German school officials will say when I tell them the kids are missing 2 weeks each year for their first two years here to go to Disney:eek:)
We did go to DLP this spring. We had lots of fun and some of the rides are better there than anywhere--but felt no draw to go back any time soon (not as much to do, didn't like the food, our friends weren't there, no DCL cruise to take afterward and the lack of Disney efficeincy and customer service made it much less relaxing than we want:upsidedow).
Thanks for the tip to ask Bavaria. I am not familiar with that poster, but I will watch the thread for a couple of days and if nothing else pops up that send me in a really good direction, I will send her a PM.:thumbsup2

First of all, if you are military, have you considered the possibility of Space A? It is truly the cheapest, but leave you with the possibility of not getting on the flight in either direction.

Our situation is a catch 22 when flying commercially. We fly from Naples, a much smaller airport. This creates an additional connection to the main part of the overall flight, causing additional cost. If we were to travel to Rome, we would save the airfare, but then the catch 22 is the additional cost of gas and parking (if driving), train fare and other transportation fees to get from train to airport (if traveling that way), wasted time, etc. We just pay to fly from Naples.

What we have found is just looking at Kayak for basic airline rates gives us an idea of what we will most likely be paying. We always start looking as soon as we have a definite date set for the vacation or whatever your reason for flying. The further out usually means cheapest fares.

Check the airline websites. For example, we find a price we are ok with on Kayak and check the official airline webite instead. The price was actually cheaper on the airline website than Kayak. In addition, the official website offered more schedule options that worked out better for the time of day we wanted to arrive. The cost was no more than what was advertised on kayak. I have found that Kayak tends to offer some lower rates, but many of the flights leave less than an hour layover between connections and some of those layovers can cause a normally 14-17 hour trip to be 33!

One other thing.......All airlines have partner airlines when flying across water. I prefer Lufthansa simply for the added room and comfort. They also partner with United, so you could (depending on where you are flying from and to) end up with United. I am not a fan of United. The seating is terribly cramped. However, for the same flight, you should check the pricing of United. The schedule may or may not be exactly the same. My example was that going through Lufthansa website, my TO America flight was the exact same on Lufthansa and United websites, but United had a later return flight, and the total cost ended up being cheaper too. Just something to think about.

I would be a bit afraid of purchasing separate tickets for different legs of the total flight. For example, you buy a ticket to London for cheaper overall fare (maybe). Unless you gave yourself a huge layover, say your first flight has mechanical problems and does not leave for a few hours, causing you to miss your next flight. What is the next airlines policy on missing a flight? In addition, separate tickets means you have to go to baggage pickup, then transfer it to the next airline. Wasted time and aggrivation. If you bought the entire flight through an airline, even if you have multiple connections, you only have to touch the luggage when you get in America to go through customs. The original airline always makes sure the luggage pushes through to the connecting flight, saving you from luggage retrieval. Missing a connection when buying entire flight through one ticket means less hassle to fix a mess created by delays.

Please stay away from Alitalia if they service one of your locations. They partner with Air France. Check the details. Alitalia is the worst and always has been.

Also, not sure about Germany, but Italy requires us to have a document stating we can remain in the country past the 3 month passport stamp. If your country has one of those documents, make sure you take it with you when you travel. I have found Germany to be the most strict with travel documents in the airport. They almost take a magnifying glass to ours and almost rejected my son's because he was 12 when we moved to Italy and 15 when we first flew commercially. His looks obviously had changed. They hesitated to let him through.

Oh, for us, $1,000 is about the cheapest we have found to get us to America.

Sorry for the long winded explaination. Hope it was not too confusing.

Thanks to bothof you.

OK. So your dates are set.

My post was assuming you could "jump" when you saw the deal. If your dates are set then you might not get lucky.

The other thing is that the airlines are "adjusting" to the new economy by reducing the number of flights resulting in higher fares. The "Europe" fare has always made some money for the American carriers and they seem to be showing some common sense there (cutting capacity to keep fares profitable).

Good luck!

Fly Air Berlin from Dusseldorf to Miami or Fort Myers and then drive up to Orlando. Air Berlin is almost always the cheapest on Europe-U.S.
