best discounts on resort? "surprise trip"

I'm taking my girlfriend to WDW the second weekend of september.
and she has no clue we are going! I want to make sure she has a great time since this will be her first time EVER in WDW (can you imagine?!).

SO anyways, what i want to know is, what's the best way to get a great price on our resort? the resort I have in mind is all star sports if that makes a difference.

Do you have AAA Auto Club Membership or are you an AP holder...because you can get room and/or package discounts with either of those.

If that's the resort you like-go for it!! Money is definitely an issue these days-and by staying there you can afford a nice place right on Disney!
How do you plan to surprise her??
When we surprised our kids on Christmas-we bought them backpacks & had these embroidered Mickey & Minnie on them. Inside we had Disney paper(about the size of an index card) with dates on them...my daughter figured it out-they were so excited!!! Hope you have a great time

You mention you are suprising her and are considering AS Sports. Is she a sports fan? New England Patriots (woo-hoo!!) like me and DH?? or possible Red Sox? (I am from Holden/Princeton line north of Worcester so we are HUGE Patriots fans) Anyway, you may already know that there are various building with sports icons. There is Baseball, Football, Surfing, Baseketball and Tennis. The Tennis buildings are the most private/quiet as they are at the back. The football building, if you face the football field, is the noisiest. There is an unbelievable echo and it is a popular location for people to hang out. There is a pool at the baseball buildings and if I remember correctly, by the surfing buildings. Really depends on what you are going for regarding atmosphere. DH and I have stayed in Baseball and Football and if we go back, we will request the tennis buildings. Again, this is all a matter of personal preference and exactly what your interests are as a couple. We prefer POP simply because of the lake. Nice to walk along and read all of the trivia from different eras. The icons are awesome too and you can see the fireworks at EPCOT from the back of the 50's buildings, or if you are in the 50's building, with a room facing EPCOT in the distance, you have a great view. You mentioned the weekend so not sure how long you are going for. AAA has good rates, or if you are military (like us) you can get discounts also. If you are an annual passholder they currently have great rates for that time frame. I believe it is around $64 per night. But if not, go with AAA. They are helpful. Or, just call a Disney rep and ask if there are any special rates for the dates you are requesting. Determine if a room only booking would be the way to go, or a package. A word of caution though, you are going during Free Dining (which had to be booked by 6/26) and trying to book a table service meal for the timeframe you are planning for will be extremely difficult, so just determine if the dining plan (if you plan to use it) will be worth it for you. If you don't have AAA or an AP, call Disney direct and ask for the best price at the resort of your choice. There are several specials out there, but you have to ASK.

If it seems high, or even if you want to comparision shop while you have them on the line, ask them what the best rate it at any of the Value resorts.
