Okay, I am 60 lbs overweight. I had my chlolesterol checked about 1 month ago and it is 287 with triglycerides of 350(I am told that is not good.) Dr. started me on Pravchol to lower my chol. I have a hard time keeping on 1 diet a day, I get discouraged and start another type even in the same day. I don't know what is wrong with me. I am 54 and just got my hormones checked and find out results this week. I kind of like Atkins because of the faster weight loss but really worry about the cholesterol. Has anyone had these troubles and what finally worked for you? I love cheese but this could be bad too on Atkins? And bacon? Sorry this is so lone. I am desperate!!!!

The problem with diets is they work differently for each person, I personally could not follow Adkins, I am not a big meat eater and have to have lots of fruit and vegetables. I did weight watchers for awhile and this is a great program, I did lose weight but after awhile it came to a stall and I got frustrated so I quit. Now this time I am following the plan from Dr. Phil's book and have had good results. I find if I limit my carbs and increase my fat intake I do much better. I also invested into a soft ware program called diet power which has been a powerful tool for me to keep a daily journal of all the foods I eat. It also keeps track of exercising. I know some here on the boards use fitday but since the diet power was a gift I have become to use it daily. I don't know how much I have helped you but perhaps there will be others that have better advice. I also think that as we age our bodies hold on to the fat..I am almost 50 and it is so much harder for me to lose weight now then it was when I was younger..good luck with whatever your choice with diet plan.

this is a real tough question -- I would suggest you lurk a bit on the different plan related threads and see what looks the most accomodating for you, and start there (south beach, WW, atkins, portion control, etc)

for me WW is my crutch to relearn how to eat and portion control to lose and ultimately maintain the weight I WISH to be. WW works for me, but not everyone. whatever you choose it needs to progress into a lifestyle that you can live with. It has taken me a year to accept this as a lifestyle and feel good about it. give yourself time

pick something you can change and start there -- whether it's drinking 64 oz of water daily; exercising 20 mins a day 5-6 times a week; cutting back on junk food, etc. take baby steps as you are ready and it will snowball into the success you are seeking

I personally have tried the Zone, atkins, Body for Life, guilt and portion control. WW was finally what clicked for me -- don't give up just keep looking ahead

onward and downward and welcome to WISH!

Thank you so much for your help. I will start small and work myself up. My biggest problem is I get discouraged if I don't lose a lot of weight really fast. I think maybe I should get rid of my scales because that throws me off if I gain anything and give up. I am hoping my hormones are out of whack and can get some help there because I retain a lot of water too, my ankles get huge at night. Dr. didn't seem to be concerned though. I will keep lurking and I think something will stand out for me. Thanks again.

Throwing out the scale is a good idea, the scale can be very frustrating. When starting a new diet plan and exercising.....please remember to take your measurements. When the scale doesn't seem to be moving....you could still be losing inches. And another thing to remember, if you are exercising, muscle weighs more then fat. I currently work out 5 days a week and have finally come to the conclusion that I am gaining muscle just as fast as I am losing fat so I can not count on the scale to be accurate. I feel better, look better and my cloths are getting to big so something is working right. Good luck and try not to give up, you can lose it, it just takes time and effort. And this is a great place for help, you can always find support here when you need it most.

I have lost weight twice on weight watchers so I know that works
but honestly I was hunger and really hunger alot on that plan
I did nutrisystem once lost a gang of weight on that too but lost it to fast. once I stopped eating their food the weight just came back.

I tried Atkins but it didn't click for me. I'm not sure if it was my mind set was wrong or what. I gave up too easily on that.

I have been doing south beach diet for just two months now and have lost at least 25lbs. It is coming off in 1-2 lbs per week now. I am quite satisfied with this change in eating. We eat lower carbs mostly good carbs. It is a low carb diet but not one where you can eat all kinds of fat or fatty foods all the time
I am also doing portion control because I really have alot of weight to lose.
I love this way of eating. I don't feel deprived. I am never hungry except at meal time. Things have just changed for me.

Good luck finding something that works for you
