best deals Universal hotels

Has anyone stayed by Universal? We've always stayed at WDW but are taking a cruise next year instead and just to go to Universal for 2 nights beforehand. Are there any hotels that you get more bang for your buck with Universal extras?

If you are staying at one of the onsite hotels you get unlimited express pass which is similar to Disney's fastpass but much better since there is no wait for a return time. One nights stay will get you this perk for day of check in and day you check out. Also, it currently allows one hour early entrance to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. And lets not forget the convenience. It is only a 5 -10 min walk from the 3 onsite hotels to the parks, or if you would prefer a boat leaves from the resort to take you to the parks every few minutes.

The 3 deluxe onsite Universal resorts -Portofino Bay, Royal Pacific and Hard Rock-give you the best perks( Express pass ,Early entry,walking distance/dedicated boat ).
The newest value/moderate Universal resort-Cabana Bay- opening next year will only have Early entry
There are partner hotels nearby that offer early entry, but no express pass and once the new Universal value/moderate resort opens there is question whether or not any of the offsite hotels will be offering early entry anymore.

Bear in mind...If you are going summer or later next year , the new Harry Potter expansion will be opening, and that will drive crowds up tremendously.Staying onsite will be beneficial
