I usually buy a few packs of those bulk packed full sized bars from either
walmart or costco -- I figured by the time I give a few pieces of those mini bar ones to each kid (no one gives just one of those tiny things!) it is around the same price as just buying a full sized bar for each kid. my daughter always comes home with a bunch of full sized bars from trick or treating.
I had a few kids gripe about only getting one bar of candy - they were full-sized bars, but that wasn't good enough! I've also had them grab from the bowl I bring to the door, while I'm reaching in to give them a handful. Greedy little punks. I'd rather have full-sized bars left over, but that's greed on my part, lol.
That's only the kids who come later in the day, by car. The parents don't even get out or watch the kids. They park at the top of the hill and light up a cigarette while the kids make the rounds of strangers' houses. I wonder if they're more polite with neighbors they know? Most of the kids who live around here, that I recognize from the playground, come with parents in tow and are polite/patient. I wonder if freedom goes to the visitors' heads and they forget their manners?
Since we have so few kids come by I always create goody bags. All of the non-chocolate candy I buy at the Dollar Tree.
I started doing that a few years ago, to stop the grabbing. I have a separate bucket of toddler goody bags, that have less candy, but some fun toys, pencils and stickers that I bought at after-Halloween sales the year before.
I love Halloween, I think it's a fun way to meet and chat with your neighbors. The parties that many communities/families substitute aren't the same thing.
I decorate my house, not excessively or ghoulishly, but just enough to make them laugh. (The bat that flies around my porch or tree is always a hit.) I ask the kids without costumes do tricks to entertain me in exchange for their candy - some come back the next year to show me their new tricks! When I see an obviously made-with-love or self-created costume, I make a fuss about it. I've had kids recognize me at supermarkets and ask about my "pet bat." It's sweet and all in good fun.
