UGH! DD will be studying in Germany for a semester this spring. Being from Texas, she does not own a heavy coat or snow boots. I've been bugging her to start looking for these items for a few months but as a typical 20 year old, she waits till it's too close to the date. She leaves in 19 days. She's looking for a Small down coat, preferably long, and Sorel boots. Anyone have any idea where is the best place to order these? I've checked LL Bean and they're out of most sizes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a down coat from Land's End (The Shimmer Coat), but it's not one that "packs". It is warm enough for a Wisconsin winter and I'm not sure how warm the packable ones are. I would check places like Sierra Trading Post or Zappos for boots.

Lands end has a bunch of jackets and boots marked down now...free shipping if the order is over $50.

Where in Germany is she going to study? I was stationed in Mannheim for 2 years and didn't need either a super heavy coat or snow boots....

I live in Germany and right now our winter has sucked! It's 50* and raining! I'm sure winter will come though, so really any good jacket will do. Columbia and north face both make great jackets that aren't too bulky and keep me warm all winter long. Boots can be nice but she doesn't necessarily need them. I rarely ever use my snow boots. She will need some good scarves (she can buy those here, Europeans LOVE scarves) and gloves. Tell her to have a wonderful time, spring is so fantastic in Germany!

Thanks for the tips! She will be in Bonn. Yeah, we've been looking at the weather and has even included Bonn on my iPhone weather app to check the daily forecast and it has been colder here in Texas the last few weeks LOL! I'm just worried she'll go without warm clothes. She's never been around snow except for one or two days that it snowed here and it melted as soon as it hit the ground.:rotfl2:

Eddie Bauer has a bunch of long down coats available (on sale also). I've been keeping my eye on them but even on their current sale they are a little too expensive for me. I need them to be 40%-50% off to be able to afford one.

REI has some on clearance. Pretty much everything they carry is pretty high quality - their buyers are good. They don't have Sorel boots on sale, but they have Sorel like brands. And the down jacket they have for reasonable is waist length, but very fashionable for the girls up here in the frozen tundra (who wouldn't be caught dead in a long down jacket - if you want it long, its a wool pea coat).

If you haven't gotten anything yet, but I am assuming you did, I would probably look at getting the 3 in 1 coat from North Face that way you can use it as a spring coat also. As for boots, I am a HUGE fan of Bogs. Those boots serve a multipurpose.....in snow and spring rains :).

I am in Alaska and I always buy Bogg boots they are great rain and snow boots...worth the money as they work in spring (alaskan summers) and winter

Kittery Trading Post. They are a big outdoors outfitter in Kittery, Maine. They have a huge online selection usually. I haven't bought from them this year but prices are usually very good as well.

Also try Sierra trading post. Mostly closeout stuff but from brands like Marker, North Face, Columbia, Spider, etc. The prices are really good and if you sign up for their e-mails you can usually get some great coupon prices.

I've bought Columbia and Sorel Brands from both these retailers in the past and saved tons.

There's a Columbia outlet store over in the Premium Outlets in Allen (north of Dallas). If you're near there, I saw some awesome prices earlier this month.

I assume many of the jackets are on sale at Dicks or Sports Authority as well, since they'll be making way for their Spring stuff pretty soon.
